ANIMAL SOCIAL BEHAVIORS

Social Behavior: Society – group of the same animals living and working together Increases the chance for successful reproduction and survival

1. Communication: Animals use sound, light, chemicals, and body language Pheromone – a chemical that is produced by one animal and influences the behavior of another animal of the same species. (to attract mates, signal danger or food)

2. Reproductive behavior Courtship: actions males and females carry out to attract a mate Nest building to protect young from cold Herding of animals to protect young from predators

Courtship Examples special calls, postures, movements, special plumage, bright colors or other ornamentation A peacock shows his feathers Male bowerbird builds and decorates nest

Frog mating calls or song Peacock spider dances https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_yYC5r8xMI

3. Territorial Behavior Physical space an animal defends against own species Includes breeding, feeding, and/or mating areas Reduces competition so improves survival and successful reproduction

4. Aggressive Behavior Forceful behavior used to dominate or control another animal Used to defend young, territory, food Teeth baring, growling, bird calls
