Study Abroad Insurance 2017 Anita Randell, Insurance Officer University House E mail: insurancesupport@port.ac.uk Direct tel: 023 92 843308

What will be covered by this presentation? Details of the University insurance arrangements Pre-Trip planning Insurance cover Brief overview of work placements abroad

Am I insured by the University? University Travel Insurance covers all students on authorised Study Abroad/Work Placements - no additional cost to you. Permission to travel form triggers insurance. http://www.port.ac.uk/special/studyabroad/outgoingstudents/practicalinformation/permissiontotravel

Who are the University Insurers? Policy renews 1 August 2017 but being tendered. Insurer and contact details may change but cover will be no less favourable. Information will on the University Study Abroad web-site in July 2017. Covers trips up to 12 months UK-UK

Are there any countries that I may not be permitted to travel to? Changes depending on world events but as at February 2017, includes Libya, Syria, Afghanistan, Mali, Somalia, Yemen, Nigeria (Niger Delta and North of Abuja), Iraq, Chechnya, North Korea, Myanmar, Iran, Algeria, Pakistan, Venezuela, Philippines. Countries where FCO recommend against travel Countries which TravelGuard rate risk as “extreme” If the UK/US have imposed sanctions If this affects you, contact Insurance Officer ASAP to discuss plans as you may not be insured or permitted to travel.

Pre-Travel Planning Tools

TravelGuard Provided by insurer www.aig.co.uk/travelguard Security Information/alerts Health Information Emergency Assistance Information New “App” – AIG Business Travel Policy number 0015865120

Risk Assessment To be completed for all trips which TravelGuard consider to be “High Risk” or above and discussed with tutor/signed off by Head of Department. http://www.port.ac.uk/special/overseastravel/riskassessment/ Purpose is to identify risks and ensure suitable and sufficient control measures are in place to reduce the risk of harm or injury.

What cover is provided by the University Travel Insurance?

Medical Expenses/Repatriation Call 24 hour Emergency Medical Helpline prior to seeking medical treatment. Failure to call them could invalidate your insurance. Where possible can arrange hospital to bill insurers direct – no nasty bills. Co-ordinate care to ensure you get best possible treatment. Second Opinion. Case study – Air ambulance from Grand Cayman to Miami.

Other considerations: Exclude journeys against medical advice Limited capabilities in some areas (TravelGuard) Emergency Medical cover only. Consider Private HealthCare for routine treatment. Host University requirements (USA) AJG alternative (Bronze, Silver, Gold) Don’t forgot your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcareabroad/EHIC/Pages/about-the-ehic.aspx

Cancellation/Curtailment Cover if a trip has to be cancelled or cut short as a direct result of a cause which is outside your control. Exclude failure of airline/events known about/disinclination to travel. (ABTA/ATOL) Your responsibility to have correct travel documentation. Visa/passport. Allow sufficient time… E.g – accident or illness just before due to leave UK.

Personal Effects/Money Personal belongings Emergency replacement of visa, passport etc Must report to police within 48 hours. Property irregularity report from airline Be vigilant and don’t display obvious signs of wealth.

Activities If high risk activities are included in the holiday, separate specific personal travel insurance should be purchased. If integral part of studies/work placement refer to Insurance Officer.

Holidays… Incidental holidays are covered up to a maximum of 14 days for placements over 3 months. Must be in country of student/placement. If holiday time is longer or you are visiting another country, you will need separate personal holiday insurance.

Work placement abroad Complex Health and Safety/Insurance questionnaire to be competed. Insurance wise, this checks that the host has adequate insurance to cover their legal liability for injury to yourself whilst on placement or your legal liability for injury you may cause to third parties. Rules/practices vary per country. Gaps will be identified by Placement Office and risk based decision whether or not to proceed. Erasmus form is for funding purposes and is in addition to this checklist.

Have a safe and successful trip Any Questions?
