1 Health & Safety Committee Training Day 2014

2 What this session will cover:
Why we have Health & Safety paperwork & Your/Our Responsibilities Accidents & First Aid Initiations & Socials Safety Checklists Risk Assessments

3 We need Health & Safety paperwork...
...to keep everyone safe! Your Responsibilities: To ensure all committee members are aware of the Health & Safety policy and their role in ensuring it is followed by their activity To ensure all activities by the group have adequate Health & Safety procedures in place, and these have been confirmed by the Activities Department To hand in all Health & Safety paperwork required for an activity, comply with requests for more information from the Department, and not undertake any activity that has not had Health & Safety paperwork signed off by the Activities Department. Our Responsibilities: To develop and implement a Health & Safety Policy for Activities To provide training and information on the Health & Safety Policy To advise and assist committee members in implementing adequate Health & Safety procedures for their activity

4 Accidents & First Aid Accident Reporting Emergency Procedure First Aid
Accidents and near misses Hand in the form within 24 hours Emergency Procedure On Campus / Off Campus Emergencies Who to talk to Emergency Services The Union University Security: First Aid All groups must have access to First Aid during their activity First Aid can be provided by the venue or trained members All groups should have access to an adequate First Aid kit for their activity You can borrow First Aid kits from the Activities Department Replacement items are available from the Activities Co-ordinators following completion of an Accident Report Form

5 Initiations & Socials Initiations Socials Are banned!
Are “any action taken or situation created as part of induction into or continued membership of a student organisation, which produces or could be reasonably expected to produce mental or physical discomfort; harm or stress; embarrassment; harassment or ridicule.” If you aren’t sure whether a social activity could fit in the above criteria, ask yourself whether you could explain why the activity was undertaken to: the Union the University someone’s parents the Police the Coroner Socials When activity groups get together to socialise rather than undertake their usual activity Alcohol may be involved but should never be a compulsory part of the event It is the individual’s choice whether they attend and take part in any activities It is your responsibility to ensure that socials are planned and run so as to not in any way become an initiation We recommend having a designated supervisor to ensure all members have an enjoyable and safe experience, and that no activity takes place that could cause danger to someone’s health or well-being

6 Safety Checklists & Risk Assessments
Simple form that all activity groups must complete First page – gives details of the group and what activities take place Second page – series of checks for the committee to undertake to ensure basic Health & Safety is in place

7 Risk Assessments To be completed by high risk activity groups and all sport groups. As a general rule of thumb: if your group requires insurance a Risk Assessment is to be completed Any ‘higher risk’ activity must be risk assessed to ensure adequate health & safety provisions are in place It is the responsibility of the committee of a group to produce any risk assessments needed for the group, however the Activities Co-ordinators will happily give advice and recommendations The risk assessment form is an excel document – please complete it and it to your site Activities Co-ordinator before the end of June. All groups will still need to risk assess any activity that is ‘higher risk’ – e.g. trips off campus, hosting events such as shows, – basically anything that is not their core activity as listed on the safety checklist!

8 Reminders – Dates & Contacts
All forms and information are available in the Activities Handbook – Safety checklists and risk assessments need to be in by end of June You can contact the Activities Co-ordinators with any queries: Stoke Stafford Lindsay Tate Activities Hub, College Road (available weekdays) Michelle Emery Student Space, Beaconside (available Mon, Tue, Weds, Thurs)
