L. I: To be able to describe the composition and function blood COPY L. I: To be able to describe the composition and function blood Think! What is the nervous system made up of? What are the 3 types of nerve cells What are reflex actions?

Blood You will probably have about 4 litres of blood in your body. It flows around your body all the time.

What is blood made up of? Plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Red blood cells – contain haemoglobin and carry oxygen around our body as well as nutrients. White blood cells – protect your body from germs. They can fight off infections. Platelets – help blood to clot at wounds.

White blood Cells Red blood Cells

Platelets

The heart keeps blood moving around the body. It can help pump blood around the body to all the cells that need it. The heart keeps blood moving around the body.

Intestines Where digested food is found.

Blood collects oxygen and drops off carbon dioxide here. Lungs The lungs are responsible for breathing. Oxygen is breathed in through the lungs and transported to all the cells within the body Carbon dioxide is transported to the lungs so that it can be breathed out. Blood collects oxygen and drops off carbon dioxide here.

Cells Cells need oxygen and food to perform their function. Cells also can create waste products which need to be removed from the cells. Blood takes carbon dioxide and waste chemicals away from here. Blood drops oxygen and food here

Blood drops off waste chemicals here Kidneys The kidneys filter the blood to remove any waste material or chemicals. Blood drops off waste chemicals here
