1 Circulatory System

2 Functions of the Circulatory System
Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to the cells in the body Blood picks up carbon dioxide and carries it away from the cells to the lungs Blood picks up other waste and these are filtered out of the blood by the kidneys

3 Movement of materials into and out of the blood
Diffusion- movement of materials from high to low concentration Active transport – requires energy, usually large molecules or from low to high concentrations

4 Organs and their functions
Heart – causes blood to move through the body by its pumping action

5

6 Organs and their functions
Blood Vessels – tubes that carry blood throughout the entire body; made of smooth muscle and connective tissue Arteries- vessels that carry blood away from the heart, Veins- carries blood back to the heart Capillaries – small vessels only one cell thick; where gas exchange occurs between the blood and cells

7 Capillaries – exchanges gases and nutrients with cells
oxygen CO2 nutrients
