Mini lesson Point of View. — 5th grade Standard: RI5.6 – Analyze multiple accounts of the same event or topic, noting important similarities and differences

Essential Questions: What does the author want the reader to understand about this text? What are some of the most important ideas related to this topic? What is similar and different about how the information is presented in these texts?

Vocabulary: Point of view- A particular attitude or way of considering a matter Perspective- A mental view or outlook

Learning Target I can identify the similarities and differences when analyzing multiple accounts of the same event.

Today we will compare the perspective of two articles on the Boston Massacre   Boston Massacre for Kids Boston Massacre for Academic Kids How is the information organized? What does the author want the reader to understand about the topic? What is the author’s point of view or perspective on the topic?

Article 1: Boston Massacre for Kids As I read, think about what type of text structure the author used, what his point of view on the topic might be what evidence you can find to support this As we discuss be prepared to support your responses with evidence from the text.

Guided Practice: Boston Massacre for Academic Kids With a partner, read this additional article on the Boston Massacre As you read, think about what type of text structure the author used to organize the ideas presented. Then discuss with your partner what you think the author wants you to learn and his/her point of view on the topic. Record your responses in the chart provided.

Link: As you read expository texts on a common topic, think about the structure of the text, the author’s point of view and how that impacts what the author wants you to learn. Today we focused on standard RI5.6 – We analyzed multiple accounts of the same event (Boston Massacre) or topic, noting important similarities and differences.
