Standard: RI5.6 – Analyze multiple accounts of the same event or topic, noting important similarities and differences

2 Essential Questions: What does the author want the reader to understand about this text? What are some of the most important ideas related to this topic? What is similar and different about how the information is presented in these texts?

3 Vocabulary: Point of view- A particular attitude or way of considering a matter Perspective- A mental view or outlook

4 Teaching: When analyzing two different texts on the same topic, it is helpful to begin by thinking about what we know about each text. How is the information organized? What does the author want the reader to understand about the topic? What is the author’s point of view or perspective on the topic? When we have a clear understanding of this, we can then think about the similarities and differences between two texts.

As I read, think about what type of text structure the author used, what his point of view on the topic might be, and what evidence you can find to support this. As we discuss be prepared to support your responses with evidence from the text. Let’s complete the graphic organizer on the next slide together. We will answer 3 important questions related article #1.

7 Guided Practice: With a partner, read an additional article on the Boston Massacre from . As you read, think about what type of text structure the author used to organize the ideas presented. Then discuss with your partner what you think the author wants you to learn and his/her point of view on the topic. Record your responses in the chart provided.

8 Link: As you read expository texts on a common topic, think about the structure of the text, the author’s point of view and how that impacts what the author wants you to learn. Today we focused on standard RI5.6 – We analyzed multiple accounts of the same event (Boston Massacre) or topic, noting important similarities and differences.
