THE MISSION CIETL is committed to the colleges core mission of helping all our students move successfully through their academic plan, including basic skills, transfer, and career/technical education courses. CIETL does this by piloting, evaluating, and supporting innovative teaching and learning practices that encourage collaboration and community building and increase the retention, success, and persistence rates of our students. CIETL promotes sharing of this scholarship of teaching and learning among faculty here and elsewhere.

F OCUSED I NQUIRY N ETWORK (FIN) The Focused Inquiry Networks are informal, dynamic groups of faculty and staff (and sometimes others) at a community college whose members learn together about their professional practice by conducting an inquiry about a topic of importance to them. The inquiry steps are: (1)design the inquiry (2)collect data (3)make meaning and shape practice (4)share the information with the college community. Learning Communities – 2010 Learning community experiences are highly regarded for their positive impact on student success and retention, and cross-disciplinary learning for faculty to: - promote student engagement and enhance the quality of student life - help students develop academic skills (reading, writing, speaking) in the context of meaningful learning - promote enriching conversations among faculty about scholarly topics across disciplines - broaden pedagogical repertoire of faculty Continuing Learning Communities at Cañada College Success College Success in the Evening One Childhood/Two Languages Academic Scholarship and Success (CBET/Silicon Valley Foundation) English for the Workforce

Future Learning Communities at Cañada Linked Transfer Classes Learning Communities (two or more classes) In this integrated model, students enroll in all participating classes. Students and faculty engage in a collaborative, supportive learning experience. ESL 400 linked with LIBR 100 (beginning Fall 2010) Academic Scholarship and Success ART 680 linked with MUS 680 A Moveable Feast

A Movable Feast ART 680 CB or MUS 680 CB Featuring visits to San Francisco art museums and the opera Wednesdays 1-3 pm Impressions of East Meets West Fall 2010 ARTS HONORS SEMINAR

Honors Interdisciplinary Forum (Learning Community) Students enrolled in one (or more) of the participating courses may enroll in the Honors Forum (1 unit) course Faculty share their expertise in a variety of disciplines, supporting a common theme (Faculty Forums) with panel discussions Students explore different disciplines through common themes and readings Faculty and students engage in a collaborative, supportive environment for thinking and discussion Film series is an opportunity for connected occasions to enrich understanding of the theme

On the Same Page Faculty in two or more disciplines select a common text to use in their classes Students experience a cross-disciplinary approach to a common intellectual experience Authors are invited to speak
