Sentence types

Simple One subject One predicate (verb) A complete thought aka – An Independent clause

examples She just told me. She just told me an important secret. Candy, a student in Mr. Rogers’ writing class, just told me an important secret about Juan, another student in the class.

Compound Two independent clauses (Simple sentences) Joined together using A comma followed by a conjunction A semicolon

examples He ate breakfast, but he did not eat lunch. He did not eat lunch, but he ate breakfast. He ate breakfast; he did not eat lunch.

Complex An independent clause(IC) and a dependent clause (DC) Joined together with a subordinating conjunction A comma is necessary if the DC comes FIRST

Examples Before I ate lunch, I washed my hands. I washed my hands before I ate lunch While I was teaching writing, Alondra took a little nap. Alondra took a little nap while I was teaching writing.

Compound-Complex Combines a complex sentence with another sentence of any kind. Example: Although they attended the same high school, Bob went to college, and Mary wasted her life working as a sandwichboard.
