Ergonomics Agenda: What is Ergonomics? Ergonomic Factors in The Office BTT1O - Intro to Information Technology in Business Ergonomics Agenda: What is Ergonomics? Ergonomic Factors in The Office Benefits of Ergonomics Your Health and Ergonomics Activity

physical health of workers is affected by their What is Ergonomics? Definition the study of how the physical health of workers is affected by their workplace.

Ergonomics can affect: The speed at which employees work Workers’ health How often they are absent

What happens if a workplace is not designed ergonomically? Eye strain Headaches Tiredness Allergies Backaches Poor circulation Musculoskeletal Injuries (MSI)

Benefits of an Ergonomic Workplace Employees are happier Employees are healthier More productive Miss fewer days Less employee turnover Business can save a lot of money

Musculoskeletal Injuries (MSI) What is that? Definition - when a worker performs the same task over and over, causing stress on nerves, muscles, tendons, or other body parts Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) What is that? Definition - when a nerve in the wrist is used over and over with the wrong equipment How is it often caused? Long hours of keying at a computer workstation that is not properly adjusted to the worker’s height.

Ergonomic Factors in Office Computer Hardware Your Monitor Your Keyboard Your Mouse

The Monitor Top of the screen should be at eye level Tilt your monitor slightly upward Should be 45cm to 60cm from your face Should be cleaned often.

The Keyboard Should be kept at elbow height Fingers should land on ‘home row’ at a 90 deg angle Keep your shoulders relaxed, and your elbows at your side. Don't use your wrist rests or armrests while typing—only while resting

The Mouse Keep your mouse close to your keyboard Use your elbow-not your wrist-to move the mouse Keep your wrists in a straight or “neutral” position Use a light grip

Furniture Your Chair Your Desk

The Chair Height - your thighs should roughly parallel to the floor Recline slightly Sit back in the chair Move around!

The Desk Have enough room around you Have enough room under the desk Edges of desk should be round and smooth Medium to light coloured surface to reduce glare

Work Environment Temperature Air Quality Cleanliness Lighting

Environment Temperature between 15C and 22C Plenty of air circulation - but not drafty! Keep it clean - molds, dust, allergies etc.

Lighting Background lighting should be low or glare free Use blinds or drapes to control the light from windows Your light level should be suitable for your task
