nouns There are various categories of noun, but they are all “naming words.” They just name different types of things. Common Noun Proper Noun Compound Noun Countable Nouns Non-Countable Nouns Collective Nouns

Common nouns (the ones you know already) Common Noun: A word used to name a person, animal, place, thing, or abstract idea. Examples: book, smell, dog, forest, leg, delight, boredom, success, and failure Common Nouns can be divided into two subcategories. Concrete Noun Abstract Noun

Concrete noun Concrete Noun: used to name something you can identify with one or more of the five senses (book, leg, dog, etc.) - You can see it, smell it, taste it, touch it, or hear it. Examples: Ohio, desk, water, watch, boy, baseball, etc. Any guesses on what an abstract noun is?

Abstract nouns Abstract Noun: Names something that has no physical existence Examples: Beauty, bravery, brilliance, determination, enthusiasm, evil, fear, generosity, confidence, compassion, etc.

Common nouns in a nutshell Concrete Nouns Abstract Nouns Names something you can identify with one of the 5 senses: Sport, dog, smell, sound Names something that has no physical existence: Delight, failure, compassion, confidence

Proper noun Proper Noun: used to name a specific person, animal, place, or thing. It is usually written with a capital letter to show its importance Examples: President Obama, the Statue of Liberty, Monday, Christmas, Philadelphia, Toyota, Pledge of Allegiance, Mount Rushmore, etc.

Compound noun Compound Noun – A noun made up of more than one word, usually: Two nouns or a noun and an adjective To make something with a meaning of its own Examples: apple tree, lion tamer, feel-good factor, tan line, lawsuit, science fiction

The numbers game Another way of categorizing nouns is to divide them into 2 categories: COUNTABLE and NON-COUNTABLE (MASS) NOUNS Countable – Used to name something that can be counted, such as one plate, two eggs, three sausages. Hint: You would ask, “How many are there?” Non-Countable – Refers to something that cannot be counted and therefore has NO PLURAL. Examples: Air, art, milk, money, stupidity, sand, wisdom. Hint: You would ask, “How much?”
