1 Parts of Speech There are 8 of them!

2 NOUN Nouns name persons, animals, places, things, qualities, ideas and classes or groups of these. The plaques and medals on the wall were a testament to the courage of the firefighter injured in the line of duty.

3 Types of Nouns: Concrete
Name something physical that can be perceived by one or more of the five senses Five senses: sight, sound, smell, touch, taste Examples: elephant, violin, perfume, chocolate, silk

4 Abstract Nouns Names something that cannot be seen, heard, smelled, tasted, or touched Examples: love, faith, friendship, wealth, anger, jealousy, peace, bitterness

5 Proper Nouns: Name a particular person, place, thing, or idea.
Proper nouns begin with capital letters. Examples: Barack Obama, Boston Pizza, Toronto, Toyota Sienna

6 Common Nouns: Name a person, place, thing or idea in a non-specific or general way Common nouns do not start with capital letters Examples: girl, boy, town, city, book, school

7 Compound Nouns: Consist of more than one word and are written as one word, joined with a hyphen, or written as separate words Examples: blueberry, sister-in-law, well-wisher, half-torn, Green Day

8 Singular Nouns: Refer to one of something
Examples: bird, lunch, boy, girl, man, woman, child, wolf, box

9 Plural Nouns: Refer to more than one of something
Examples: birds, lunches, boys, girls, men, women, children, wolves, boxes

10 Possessive Nouns Show ownership or possession
Examples: MacDonald’s, Timmy’s, the boys’ knapsacks, the women’s washroom, the cat’s meow

11 Jack came to see my family.
PRONOUN Pronouns represent nouns or are substitutes for them. Instead of: Jack came to see my family. He came to see us. What have you (Jonathan) done with the book? What have you done with it?
