2. Nouns – a person, place, thing, or idea There are different kinds of nouns:

Singular
A form of noun meaning one of something.

Plural
Noun meaning more than one of something.
pencils, papers, desks
Collective
A noun that means a group of individuals.
assembly, family, crew

3. Compound nouns – two nouns joined to make one.

The adjective is used with it’s noun to create a new noun.

Two nouns look like one word

Hyphenated
Have hyphens between words. Some may be written as closed nouns.

4. Noun functions in a sentence - how are nouns used in sentences?

Example
Subject
Tells “who” or “what” about the verb.
Jonathan ran to school.
Predicate noun
A noun that renames the subject.
Mr. Thomas is the teacher of my class.
Direct Object
Answers “who” or “what” after an action verb.
David threw the ball to John.
Indirect Object
Tells “to whom” or “for whom” the action is done.
Dad gave Brad money to buy the car.
Object of preposition
The last word in a prepositional phrase.
The boy was hurt in the accident.
Appositive
Explains a noun or pronoun that comes just before it.
Rebecca’s sister, Rachel, was an intelligent student.

5. Verbs - there are different types
Definition
Example
Action
A verb that expresses something that a person, animal, object or process in nature can do.
Cheri went shopping after work.
Linking
Verbs that do not express action. They connect the subject of the verb to additional information about the subject.
Janice is a shopaholic.
Helping (auxiliary)
A verb that comes before the main verb in a sentence. Always stands in front of the main verb. There can be more than one helping verb in a sentence.
Jane can ride her bike.
