Using Web 2.0 Tools in the Classroom Michelle Pulaski Behling Media + Communication Arts

Blended Learning Approach Digital Natives v. Digital Immigrants Blended learning effectively engages students in the learning process by providing them with highly interactive learning experiences that result in the resolution of an issue or problem (Garrison & Vaughn, 2008). Blended learning can be used in both face to face and hybrid courses

What is ? Web 2.0 is the name given to the shift in how people have come to use the World Wide Web Many Web 2.0 sites allow users to share knowledge, opinions, images, or videos Web 2.0 promotes a culture of participation

Web 2.0 Tools ePortfolios Blogs Wikis Facebook Flickr YouTube Social Bookmarking RSS Feeds

With Web 2.0 tools, students can consume and create information in multiple ways. Web 2.0 tools are more than just content delivery vehicles. They actually engage students with the content and allow them to actively participate in the learning process.

Current Events: students analyze real world situations using the technologies they are already familiar with in new ways (i.e. tweet a biology related current event; blog about a new K-12 teaching technique; find images of Middle East protests on Flickr) ePortfolios: used to showcase academic accomplishments and may be used to evaluate student’s use of social media (eportfolio.pace.edu). Students comment on classmates’ work and reflect on their own

LinkedIn: Create an account, make connections and ask connections for an endorsement Blogging: Create a course blog. Students can write about their experiences with podcasts related to course content (blackboard.pace.edu) Use an iPad to set up RSS feeds + search for podcasts
