3 eportfolios What is an eportfolio? E-portfolios have emerged as a valuable online tool that students, faculty, and institutions can use to collect, store, update, and share information. E-portfolios allow students to reflect on their learning, communicate with instructors, document credentials, and provide potential employers with examples of their work. (Educause, 2005) Eportfolios have been named “one of the hottest educational tools sweeping the country”

4 eportfolios eportfolios can include text based written articles, graphic elements (logo design), and multimedia elements (video). All can be stored online or on CD-ROM or DVD for easy sharing. Pace students will have access to their eportfolios after graduation through eportfolio.pace.edu eportfolios encourage personal reflection and often involve the exchange of ideas and feedback.

7 Your ePortfolio is... A place to collect and save coursework. A chance to showcase accomplishments and students’ best school work to family and friends. A tool for creating digital resumes to send to employers. An opportunity for students to use creativity to represent themselves and their education. A web portal where students can access work, track their academic growth and plan their careers. A portal that helps students connect their educational goals with their personal experiences. A chance to reflect on education, to make connections between where students are and where they want to be. A record of skills, achievements and learning.

8 Important questions for students to keep in mind when designing their portfolios… What argument about your experience should your portfolio make? Who will read your portfolio? What evidence will be most convincing to this audience?

9 Eportfolio Purpose Statement Introduce yourself – Name – Position(s) – Experience (academic/professional) Explain what portfolio provides Forecast portfolio organization

10 Provide a Description for Each “Artifact” Included in eportfolio Provide a context: What project? What problem, concept, issue was addressed? What class? Describe the artifact Discuss outcomes

11 Supporting Materials from Others Reviews of your work Letters from colleagues, professors Ask former clients to write testimonials

12 Assess Your eportfolio Does my portfolio represent the depth and breadth of my experiences? Does my portfolio show that my experiences reflect current knowledge of my field? Have I provided descriptions for each “artifact” that I’ve included? Have I acknowledged my fellow collaborators? Have I asked others to review my portfolio?

13 Design Principles Use legible fonts – Light background with dark text is recommended for the most professional feel Clear navigation – you will need decide whether or not keep your page list on each page. The pro here is easy navigation while the con is that the page list can often distract from the content Links should be obvious – different colored, underlined text, active. I also recommend setting all link to open in a new window Resize images and video so that they load within 3 seconds
