Linear or Ribbon This type of settlement is spread in a line along: An area of coastline Along a valley side Along a river valley Along a road 12/09/2018
Dispersed or Scattered This type of settlement is very common in Ireland and is scattered over an area on the map. The houses are indicated by black squares as below. They are usually single family farm units and are accessed by local roads indicated in grey. 12/09/2018
Clustered or Nucleated This type of settlement is typical of most rural villages and is concentrated on a central point on the map. The reasons for this are varied but the main one is that they are usually clustered around your typical rural crossroads. The settlement illustrated below grew up here because of the intersection of a number of roads the N5, the R367 and the N61. This road crossing became a convenient meeting place for local people and services grew up here e.g.: • A church - marked by the “cross” symbol • A school - marked by “sch” • A post office – market by the “PO” symbol Houses were also built along the roads they are marked by the little black squares. 12/09/2018
