Career Exploration: Begin with the End in Mind Education Plans Course Selection Career Assessment Individual Appointment Informational interviews Education level Choice of major/program Choice of school (for transfer student) Academic Advising Maximum relevancy to career and degree The concept of “Begin with the End in Mind” provides a basic orientation for how to navigate the college experience. Career exploration provides a destination, or “finish line,” for coursework completed. Clarification gained through career exploration activities provides clarity about the education planning process. Once clarity is reached for education planning, one has a clear sense of what courses to take currently – but also recognizes the connection between career goals and current courses. These connections foster motivation to succeed academically, and enables the student to develop relationships with employers in the intended career field while completing education requirements.

The formal assessment goes more in depth and is packaged with an interpretation of the results. A Clark instructor will interpret the results of the assessment at a scheduled group session. This method of career exploration is highly effective and helps students identify characteristics about themselves meaningful to career decision making. Online assessments are available in Oregon Career Information System and WOIS/The Career Information System. Both are online programs accessible in the Career Center and can be used at home using Clark College username and password (obtain from Career Center). Career Classes - HDEV 100/101 Career Center encourages undecided students to consider one of these classes, designed to help students through the career exploration and life-planning process. HDEV 100 is Career and Life Planning (3 cr.); HDEV 101 is Career Exploration (2 cr.). Credits can be applied as General or Specified Elective Credit on the AA-DTA (General Transfer Degree). Career Resources – The Career Center offers seven online resources protected with password or site key. In order to access these sites, students must obtain passwords from Career Center. When/If students visit the Career Center in person, they can pick up a handout which includes all passwords. The online resources include free career assessments, information about hundreds of common occupations, occupational biographies, and resources for education planning. Individual Appointments Career advising – includes overview of Career Center resources and career decision making strategies; relates career decision to education planning (choice of major, transfer school, level of education needed for occupation) Career counseling – focuses on exploration of career choices and educational goals, and includes counseling related to barriers or challenges to reach career goals

Employment Services Other Resources Drop-In Services Resume Assistance Penguin Jobs On-Campus Employment Handouts and links Individual Appointments Resume Critique To schedule appointment: Job Search Call 360-992-2902 or stop by Career Services Co-Op/Internships Financial Literacy Coaching LinkedIn Assistance and Profile Critique Drop-in Services – Career Services work study students assist Clark students and community members seeking resume assistance and guidance with on-campus employment applications. Individual Appointments – Resume/Cover Letter Critique – Full-time staff (employment specialists) conduct resume critiques for all work study applicants, students, and community members in need of assistance. The critique is the final stage of the resume review process to ensure students’ have a satisfactory resume for work study (and off-campus) employment. It is also beneficial for students who need to polish a resume in preparation for an off-campus job application. Job Search - The job search page describes a range of services and resources available to job seekers, including downloadable/printable informational handouts, link to Penguin jobs (database of job opportunities on campus and off campus), Veterans resources, volunteering opportunities, and reputable job search (simplyhired.com, linkedin.com) or employer research (glassdoor.com) websites. Co-Op/Internships - Co-op is a partnership among employers, students, and the college, designed to provide students with on-the-job training, college credit, and in most cases, wages. Co-op is an integral part of most degree and certificate programs; it enhances the educational process for students by integrating classroom instruction with hands-on experience. Internships are valuable partnerships for job experience and can add to your professional, personal, and academic growth. They can be either paid or unpaid. They do not need to be related to your major. Employers tend to use the terms Co-op/Internship interchangeably. Financial Literacy Coaching – Resources include individual appointment with Financial Literacy Coach (discuss budgeting, credit, student loans, etc.), obtain access to online financial literacy resources via SALT – all for free! LinkedIn Assistance and Profile Critique – Meet with an employment specialist to create or polish your LinkedIn profile, which is an excellent tool for professional networking and job seeking! Other Resources Penguin Jobs – Clark College’s free jobs database service designed to connect job-seekers with local employers who have employment opportunities. Events and Activities Career Clothing Closet April 21-22, 2016 Career Days 2016 April 25-28 Job preparation workshops Career Days Job Fair Student Success Workshops Free academic, personal development, and professional development workshops Career Clothing Closet – Two-day event providing free professional clothing to current Clark College students Career Days 2016 (link to Career Days page provided) – Annual four-day premier event, includes job workshops, transfer fair, and culminating in Career Days Job Fair (80 employers participated in Spring of 2015!). Student Success Workshops – free academic, personal, and professional development workshops offered to students and community members. This is an engagement opportunity for students. Workshop topics include “Resume Building,” “Interview Skills,” “Exploring Your Career Choice,” “Job Search Tips,” “Smarter Money Management,” and “Undecided About Your Major?”
