This most important element of a computer system. It is sometimes referred to as the processor or central processor.

Central Processing Unit CPU Central Processing Unit

A screen used to display the data received from a processor. This is not able to receive broadcast signals or process sound.

Monitor

Primary storage device for your computer. Also called a hard disk; this is where utilities and files are stored.

Hard Drive

Only one may be highlighted at a time. A display box that is highlighted when active and grayed-out when inactive. Only one may be highlighted at a time.

Window

Temporary memory used to run applications.

RAM (Random Access Memory)

A list of programs organized by topics located at the bottom left corner of the screen.

Start Menu

A command that inserts text or graphics. Requires that an item first be placed on the clipboard using a Copy or Cut command.

Paste

This long, rectangular box can be dragged to change the location of your view in a window.

Scroll Bar

A short, blinking vertical line that indicates where to type or where backspacing will begin.

Insertion Point

A program used on the Internet to search the World Wide Web using key words.

Search Engine

A feature built into many computers that allows the user to check for spelling errors.

Spell Check

To place, separate or arrange according to specific characteristics.

Sort

A pointing device for moving the cursor on the screen.

Mouse

A small picture used as a symbol for a file, folder or a disk.

Icon

A collection of computers that are linked together for the purpose of information sharing.

Network

To select, usually by clicking or dragging the mouse. Selected text usually turns a different color.

Highlight

The home-base environment, where you see the trash can, icons for the hard drive, files and programs

Desktop

Use this command to rename or make a duplicate of an existing document.

Save As

Use this command when you want to make the current changes permanent.

Save

A temporary storage area for cut or copied text or graphics.

Clipboard

Window that prompts you to perform a function

Dialog Box

Takes a highlighted item and places it on the clipboard.

Copy/Cut

Menu used to change the look of or sort the items in an active window.

View

An address used on the Internet to locate a web page or search engine. Like dvusd.com or Yahoo.com

URL

An object that can contain multiple documents. These are used to organize information.
