Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF)  www.cnsfweb.org New Jersey THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) is the only federal agency whose mission includes support for all fields of fundamental science and engineering. BY THE NUMBERS New Jersey in FY 2016 $164 Million: NSF funds awarded 15th: National ranking in NSF funds 36: NSF-funded institutions 509: NSF grants awarded 7: NSF research centers/facilities “Great teachers and great universities make extraordinary investments in students and research in anticipation of future benefits that are usually unknowable and occasionally implausible.” −Christopher L. Eisgruber, President, Princeton University EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH IN NEW JERSEY Scientists at two campuses of Rutgers University are collaborating on a study on the behavior of methane in northern peatland bogs. The research could shed light on how these ecosystems affect climate change and how warming temperatures affect methane release. Researchers at Princeton University have developed a new material capable of bending light backwards, which will be used to improve optical and chemical sensing capabilities for homeland security, medical diagnostics, and environmental monitoring. A study from Montclair State University has shown that a common approach to questioning children about alleged sexual abuse has the potential to increase the number of spontaneous false reports. New Jersey THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships. New Jersey received $27 million in NSF educational funding in FY 2016. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN NEW JERSEY NSF-supported graduate students at Rutgers University used a newly designed mobile laboratory to bring hands-on science demonstrations to middle schools across New Jersey. Middlesex County College, with support from the NSF, sponsors an independent program that encourages high school girls to pursue careers in scientific and technological fields. The Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship program at William Paterson University is preparing science teachers for grades 5-12 in high-need urban schools. An NSF-funded program at Kean University is trying to increase the number of academically talented, financially needy students graduating with undergraduate degrees in computer science and information technology. Students receive a two-year scholarship. Courtesy: www.research.gov/seeinnovation “We are a research university, meaning we see our mission as producing knowledge and fueling innovation. But our scholarship and research cannot come at the expense of our ability to transfer that knowledge to our students, the future leaders who will apply that knowledge and innovation as they move into the workforce.” − Dr. Robert L. Barchi, President, Rutgers University “We have momentum; we need to continue to ‘move the edge,’ applying our considerable knowledge and expertise to the challenges of our society…. We need to think about how our faculty and students fuel new industries, jobs and economic growth at home and around the world.” − Dr. Joel S. Bloom, President, New Jersey Institute of Technology Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF)  www.cnsfweb.org
