Lithuania

Lithuania is a small country in the north of Europe, situated along the shore of the Baltic sea. It covers the area of 65.300 square kilometers. The population of Lithuania is nearly 3 million people.  

It is the land of rich history, arts and culture, still living old traditions, and a little bit withdrawn, but friendly and hospitable people.

Vilnius is our capital city. Vilnius is the largest city of Lithuania. Its population is about 850 000. It is the political, economical, scientific and cultural centre of the country.

These two facts are very important for our country Lithuania became the member of NATO on the 29th of March, 2004. We started the membership in EU on the 1st of May, 2004.

The President of Lithuania – Dalia Grybauskaitė Our country is democratic country with the president and parliament. Our president Ms Dalia Grybauskaite is the first woman to have this post in all the history of Lithuania.

As our country is on the crossroads of the East and the West, in the course of history, we suffered invasions of different armies such as Polish, Russian and German.

Our Way to Independence The Baltic Way - 650 km long human chain (people holding each others’ hands through three neighbouring countries – Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia) August 23,1989. This act symbolised friendship among countries and the wish to be free from the Soviet Union.

The beauty of Lithuania is created by nice landscapes, woods, lakes and rivers, and a very unique seaside.

Trakai Island Castle was built in the XIVth century by Grand Duke Kęstutis. Kęstutis moved his main residence and his treasury to the Island.

The Hill of Crosses This is a unique hill with thousands of crosses not only from Lithuania but also from other countries of the world.

Lithuania is well known for its amber Lithuania is well known for its amber. The amateurs make a lot of nice jewellery from it.

A small town of Kulautuva, where we have come from, is situated on the right bank of the Nemunas river and it stretches for about 2 kilometres. It is surrounded by pine forests.
