2 Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, the second largest city in Scotland, and the eighth most populous in the United Kingdom. The City is located in the south-east of Scotland, Edinburgh lies on the east coast near the North Sea. Edinburgh attracts over 1 million visitors every year, what makes it the most visited tourist destination in the United Kingdom, after London.

3 Edinburgh is developed as Scotland’s legal and political centre. It is a home for the Scottish Parliament, the Scottish legal courts and numerous international consulates (консульство). Today Edinburgh is a world influencer in business, arts, science, financial services.

5 In 1707 the Act of Union joined Scotland and England together politically and moved power from Edinburgh's old parliament to London's Westminster. King George IV visited Edinburgh in 1822 and by then it was Europe’s most influential financial city outside of London with neoclassical architecture giving it a name as the Athens of the North. Today, Edinburgh combines both modernity and tradition. Modern architecture such as the Scottish Parliament sits alongside wonderful baroque buildings including the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

6 Edinburgh is divided into areas sometimes known as "links", a main local street (i.e. street of local shops), a high street (the historic main street) and residential buildings. There are also historical and cultural areas like Old and New Towns, Royal Mile and Leith.

19 To sum up  Edinburgh is a very beautiful, economically developed and attractive for foreigners city.  It is the capital of Scotland.  It has such nicknames as "Auld Reekie", "Athens of the North“ and some other.  There are historical and cultural areas: Old and New Town, Royal mile and Leith.  You can visit there galleries, museums, castles and also there are many open spaces, gardens and parks.  The world famous Military Tattoo Festival is held in Edinburgh.
