2 Poland is a country in the Central Europe. The total area of Poland is about 313 000 square kilometres. There live about 38 million people. Our country borders Germany in the west; Czech Republic and Slovakia in the south; Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania in the east; and the Baltic Sea and Russia (Kaliningrad Oblast) in the north.

3 W ARSAW – CAPITAL OF P OLAND Warsaw is located by the Vistula River. That’s the largest city in Poland. Warsaw is a center of culture, politics, science and economics. There are seats of the parliament, the President and other central authorities. In Warsaw live about 1 716 000 people.

6 C RACOW – THE P EARL OF T HE S OUTHERN P OLAND That city is the largest city (after Warsaw) and one of the oldest cities in Poland. Cracow is located by the Vistula River. There are 23 institutions of higher education in Cracow, that city is a centre of culture and science. A lot of tourists arrive there. In Cracow live about 755 000 people.

There are a lot of theaters, museums, cinemas and art galleries. Wroclaw has a unique and original architectural style. Colorful and stylish buildings add charm in this city. There live about 632 000 people.

11 G EOGRAPHY OF P OLAND Poland is a lowland; there are many lakes. The mountains in Poland are the Tatra Mountains, Pieniny Mountains, Bieszczady Mountains, Sudetes and Swietokrzyskie Mountains. Poland is situated by the Baltic Sea. The highest mountain is Rysy in the Tatra Mountains (2499 meters above sea level) and the lowest point in Poland is Raczki Elblaskie (1.8 meters below sea level).
