1  London is the capital of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is one of the largest cities in the world and the largest city in Europe. Its population is over 8 million. London is the main political, economic, industrial and financial centre of the country. Besides, it is a great educational and cultural centre.  London stands on the Thames river.  Traditionally London is divided into several parts: the City, Westminster, the West End and the East End.  The City is the heart of London, its financial and business centre. There are a lot of banks, firms and offices there. Over a million of people come to the City to work. LONDON

12  Westminster is the historical and political centre of London. There you can see Westminster Palace or the Houses of Parliament. The Clock Tower of the Houses of Parliament is known as the Big Ben. Opposite the Houses of Parliament there is the Westminster Abbey where all British monarchs have been crowned. Many famous people are burried in Westminster Abbey including statesmen, musicians, writers and scientists. Another famous building in Westminster is Buckingham Palace, which is the official residence of the Queen.

22  The British Prime Minister lives at number 10 Downing Street, nearby the Houses of Parliament.  The West End is the richest and the most beautiful part of London. It is the symbol of wealth and luxury. The best hotels, shops, restaurants, clubs and theatres are situated there. Trafalgar Square, which is also in the West End, is the geographical centre of London. It was laid out in memory of Lord Nelsons Victory in the battle of Trafalgar. There is a monument to Admiral Nelson, Nelsons Column in the centre of the Square.  There are a lot of museums and galleries in London. On the north side of Trafalgar Square there is the National Gallery, one of the finest art galleries in the world.

38  The East End is the poorest district of London and is quite different from the other parts of London. There are a lot of factories, workshops and docks there. The streets are narrow, the buildings are unimpressive. It is one of those areas of London where working class people live.
