Medicinal plants

What are the medicinal herbs? Before the times of modern-day medicine, people in old civilizations knew how to use plants to treat diseases.

Common Medicinal Plants Aloe Hypericumperforatum Mentha Thymus pulegioides Urtica dioica Melissa officinalis Garlic Salve Lavandula Chamomile HORSETAIL Dandelion

Aloe Ancient Greeks and Romans used Aloe vera to treat wounds. Aloe Vera speeds up the healing of burns. It has long been known as a treatment for sores, particularly burns, for example sunburns. Aloe could reduce the healing time of burns by around nine days compared to conventional medication.

Hypericum perforatum St John's wort is effective as a treatment for depression in humans. Hypericum wort may sometimes cause photosensitivity.

Mentha L. Mint was originally used as a medicinal herb to treat stomach ache and chest pains. It is used to help treat the common cold, inflammations and digestive problems. Menthol from mint essential oil (40–90%) is an ingredient of many cosmetics and some perfumes. Menthol and mint essential oils are also used in aromatherapy which may have a clinical use to weaken post-surgery nausea.

Thymus pulegioides L. Thyme has a long history of being used in traditional medicine to treat for example respiratory diseases - bronchitis and asthma. It is also used to prevent hardening of the arteries, to treat toothache, urinary tract infections and dyspepsia.

Urtica dioica Urtica dioica herb is used internally to treat diseases of the kidneys and urinary tract, gastrointestinal tract, locomotor system, skin, influenza and rheumatism.

Melissa officinalis In the traditional Austrian medicine, M. officinalis leaves have been used internally (as tea) or externally (as essential oil) for the treatment of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, nervous system, liver, and bile. It is also a common addition to peppermint tea, mostly because of its flavor. Lemon balm essential oil is very popular in aromatherapy.

Garlic Alium sativum The use of garlic in China dates back to 2000 BC. It was consumed by ancient Greek and Roman soldiers and sailors. Galen described it as the "rustic's theriac" (cure-all). Garlic is used to treat many diseases of the heart and blood system. Some people use garlic to prevent colon cancer, as well as to treat the common cold, diabetes, and bacterial and fungal infections. It improves the immune function because it has antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and antiparasitic effects. It also improves cardiovascular health and circulation. Toxic to at least 14 kinds of cancer cells (including brain, lung, breast, gastric, and pancreatic).

Salve (Salvia officinalis L.) Sage's name, Salvia, means "to heal" reflecting its early use as a medicinal, not culinary, herb. It can help treat mouth and throat inflammations.

Lavandula L. Lavender can help in case of insect bites and itchy skin. Lavender oil is known for its calming and relaxing effects, and has been used for fighting sleeplessness, anxiety, depression, restlessness, and stress. It is also an effective remedy for nearly all kinds of health problems, from pain to infections.

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) Chamomile has been widely used in children and adults for thousands of years for a number of health problems. Today, chamomile is used as a folk or traditional remedy for sleeplessness, anxiety, and gastrointestinal diseases such as upset stomach, gas, and diarrhea. It is also used for skin problems.

Horsetail (Equisetum) Horsetail has been used medicinally since as far back as ancient Greece. Along with helping you urinate, it’s also used for skin and nail care, wound healing, osteoporosis, and bone repair. Experts believe these potential health benefits are due to a mineral called silica, which helps the body store the calcium it needs to heal bones and build strong fingernails and hair.

Dandelion Taraxacum officinale This flowering plant has traditionally been used as a liver tonic, useful for detoxification and improving liver function. Dandelion is a stimulant that is typically used for kidney and liver diseases. It contains many nutrients, like vitamin C, vitamin B6, riboflavin, calcium, iron, potassium, and manganese. It is also a good source of vitamin A and may have cancer-fighting effects.
