Chapter 9: How should governments in Canada respond to political and economic issues

Definition Biodiversity: the variety of life on the planet. Climate Change: a rise in the average temperature of the Earth, primarily caused by emissions from burning fossil fuels. Definition

Laws, Economic decisions, rights, and consumerism Laws: they affect the quality of the environment and how governments and people must act. Economic Decision: involve how to use resources Collective Rights: the connection between Aboriginal groups and land. Consumerism: How and what we consume. Laws, Economic decisions, rights, and consumerism

Green House Gas: A gas that thickens the atmosphere and traps more of the suns heat in the earth. Causes: industry, cars, burning fossil fuels. Effects: unpredictable weather, harsher storms, water supplies disappearing, higher sea levels. Climate Change

Page 303 Look at the chart on P 303 Copy out the heading for each section but not the examples. We will discuss our own Imagine how each of these areas would be affected if the government decided to close car factories. Page 303

Read 323-326 and analyze the cartoons. Page 323-326 Activity

Alberta has the largest GSG emission in Canada due to its Oil production. This is a source of concern for the country but also a huge source of income. Page 313

The worlds richest countries met in Kyoto Japan in 1996 to discuss global emissions. It was decided that emissions levels must be lowered 10% from the 1990 levels. Canada agreed to ratify the program but has failed. The Kyoto Protocol

usaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa The USA refused because they felt it would hurt them economically. Basically, richer countries must reduce their emissions while poorer countries would have more leeway. usaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

George Bush did not want to ratify the Kyoto protocol because he felt global warming was not the fault of people and because he was afraid it would hurt American business. The USA is responsible for 30% of the worlds emissions. Canada has also failed to ratify the protocol so how can reduce our emissions? Emissions

Social advocacy is the process of taking public action. When discussing the environment, public action is seen as something that is necessary as well as powerful. The citizens of a country are the ones who affect the most through voting and action, therefore, the country is our to create as we see fit. Social Advocacy

Government Response Governments have responded in a number of ways: A: using renewable energy. B: Creating laws to protect the environment. C: Creating new technologies. D: restoring natural space. Government Response
