2 Definitions environmental impact system: A detailing of proposed policy’s environmental effects, which agencies are required to file with the EPA every time they propose to undertake a policy that might be disruptive to the environment. global warming: The increase in the earth’s temperatures that, according to most scientists is occurring as a result of the carbon dioxide produced when fossil fuels are burned collecting in the atmosphere and trapping energy from the sun.

5 Environmental Policies
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)1970: The nation’s largest federal regulatory agency. It is charged with administering policies dealing with land use, air and water quality, and wilderness and wildlife preservation. National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)1969: This law requires government agencies to file an environmental impact statement with the EPA every time they propose to undertake a policy that is potentially disruptive to the natural environment.

6 Policies continued Clean Air Act of 1970: The law aimed at combating air pollution, by charging the EPA with protecting and improving the quality of the nation’s air. Water Pollution Control Act of 1972: A law intended to clean up the nation’s rivers and lakes by enabling regulation of point sources of pollution. Endangered Species Act of 1973: A law requiring the federal government to protect all species listed as endangered.

7 Energy Issues Modern American society depends on the availability of abundant energy. We use fossil fuels for energy and they are linked to emission of pollutants into the environment. The issue of finding other ways to use energy that doesn’t hurt the environment is an ongoing battle. Coal Petroleum and Natural Gas Nuclear Energy
