By: Maile Marciel & Reika Toba Cause’s & Effect’s of the Rwanda genocide: By: Maile Marciel & Reika Toba

In our senior project, we were looking at the reasons that caused the genocide and What effects did it bring to the people that were lucky to survive it. Introduction

What is Rwanda Genocide? Rwanda genocide was the genocide between Hutu and Tutsi. In 1994, Hutu killed almost 1,000,000 Tutsis during 100days.

The Rwandan genocide was caused by Race Monarchy The Hutu extremist thinking the Tutsi rebels shot down the president of Rwanda’s plane Tutsi’s getting the better favor than the Hutu.

Race differences between Tutsi’s and Hutu’s German and Belgian colonizer said it is hard to find the racial differences between them. Hutu and Tutsi both of them speak French and Bantu-dialect language, and they believe same religion as Christianity.

Culture differences between Hutu and Tutsi The cultural differences were that the Hutu was farmer and the Tutsi was nomad a long time ago.

The myth The myth says Tutsi was from Ethiopia and Hutu came later from Chad. Because of Tutsi’s home country was closer to Europe in the myth, they thought Tutsi is better than Hutu from Chad. Until the Rwanda independent, this myth was told by people.

ID Card The ID card made many Tutsis death during 1994, Rwanda genocide. Tutsis were killed if their ID card shows they are Tutsi and the check point was in every road block by Hutus government.

down the presidents plane. The Hutu extremist thinking the RPF shot down the presidents plane. President Juvenal Habyarimana and Burundi’ Cyprian Ntayamira were coming back from Tanzania, their airplane was shot down by rocket fire near by the Rwanda’s capital city. Radio said the genocide will start and it happened because Hutu politicians thought RPF shot down the plane.

Who is Juvénal Habyarimana? Juvénal Habyarimana born in 1937. He was the president of Rwanda from 1973 to April 6, 1994. He was supporting his ethnic group, Hutu.

Immaculee Ilibagiza -Survived the Rwandan Genocide, by being in a small bathroom in Pastor Murinizi’s house with 7 other women for 90 days out of the 100 days of the genocide. - The killers came more than one time, and one killer said “ I have killed over 399 cockroaches , Immaculee will make 400.” That’s a good number to kill. - Immaculee turned to god to keep her safe and through out that brutal period of time being stuck in a bathroom in hiding, she became closer to god. -She went into hiding in the bathroom at 115 pounds, when she came out she was 69 pounds. Immaculee learned her brother and her mother were killed after she came out of hiding. She has written a book left to tell, which is about how she discovered god trough the Rwanda genocide.

What is RPF? PRF is called The Rwandan Patriotic Front The members were largely Tutsi. Now’s president of Rwanda, Paul Kagame is in this group of political force too.

Hutu power radio. During July 8, 1993 to July 31, 1994, and during the Rwanda genocide, the radio station named call RTLM (Radio Télévision Libre des Mille Collines) was playing the significant role. Every Rwandan got mentally harm from this RTLM broadcasts.

The significant role "When people ask me, good listeners, why do I hate all the Tutsi, I say, ‘Read our history.’ The Tutsi were collaborators for the Belgian colonists, they stole our Hutu land, they whipped us. Now they have come back, these Tutsi rebels. They are cockroaches. They are murderers. Rwanda is our Hutu land. We are the majority. They are a minority of traitors and invaders. We will squash this infestation. We will wipe out the RPF rebels. This is RTLM, Hutu power radio. Stay alert. Watch your neighbors”

Rape left scars on Tutsi women Intended consequences a video I watched showed many woman that have survived the rape. One woman was spared her life but thrown in a massive grave to die when another Hutu killer found her. She asked for water and he told her wait. He came back and handed her the water and said “Drink your brothers blood and go.” - Rape was done to thousands of women, that were either individually raped or gang raped, They were not only raped with male body parts but with sharpened sticks and gun barrels. - Many of the survivors of these brutal rapes have been tested and over 25,000 Tutsi women of the windows of the genocide organization showed two thirds were found to have HIV. Also many women were pregnant by these killers, many of the women wanted nothing with the child and some couldn’t help but adore them.

Conclusion In conclusion we know and have learned that the genocide of Rwanda was caused by race, differences, favoritism and blame. The out come of the survivors that went through the horrifying genocide of 1994, were not only set free but began a new life.
