Welcome to MATH 125-004 FALL 2016 MATH 125-004 Calculus I Fall 2016 Dr. Larry Bowen COURSE HIGHLIGHTS OFFICE: 128A Harris Hall PHONE: (205) 799-3093 EMAIL: lbowen@ua.edu I have a tremendous amount of flexibility to meet with you in my office during the week. Please don't delay when you need assistance. It is much better to be proactive than to wait until you are in serious trouble. IN SUMMARY, here is what you need for the course: 1. Text: Essential Calculus: Early Transcendentals by J. Stewart, 2nd Edition (Brooks/Cole). You may use the e-book version available within WebAssign if you prefer. The e-book version is available if you choose the book name above when purchasing access to WebAssign. 2. A calculator for doing some homework problems. The only device that you may use during a test is a basic, non-programmable, non-graphing calculator. The one preferred is the Casio-fx-260 school edition solar calculator. It is inexpensive and available at the UA Supply Store.  Other calculators must be pre-cleared by me before use on a test. 3.  WebAssign Access Code. This must be purchased in order to be in this class.

If you miss a further test and have a good reason for so doing (illness, etc.) then your final exam will count the appropriate amount more. Do not miss the final exam!

Welcome to MATH 125-004 FALL 2016 Grading Policy Your final course grade will be determined from homework (10%) and tests (90%). There will be 5 regular tests (15% each) and a comprehensive final examination (counted like two regular tests: 15% & 15%). So, at semester end, you will have 7 test scores (5 for the regular tests and your final score will be listed twice) like so: Test 1 score, Test 2 score, Test 3 score, Test 4 score, Test 5 score, Final exam score, Final exam score again.

Welcome to MATH 125-004 FALL 2016 Grading Policy Your final course grade will be determined from homework (10%) and tests (90%). The lowest one of these 7 scores will be dropped and the remaining 6 scores will be averaged to determine your overall test score (determining 15% x 6 = 90% of your course grade). Your WebAssign homework assignments will count for the remaining 10% of your course grade. The 4 lowest of your homework scores will be dropped and the rest of your homework scores will be averaged to produce your overall homework percentage. (Note: You are not required to get 100% on a homework assignment in order to get full credit for that assignment. If you make at least 75% on an assignment, you will get full credit for that assignment.)  Students who miss fewer than 4 classes (whether excused or unexcused) will receive a 1.5% bonus towards their final course grade.

Welcome to MATH 125-004 FALL 2016 Attendance Policy CLASS ATTENDANCE:  Students are expected to attend class. Roll is taken each class when students sign their name on the circulated class roll. Students are responsible for any work missed during an absence. If a student leaves class early without giving me prior notice, the student will not receive attendance credit even if the student signed the roll for that class day. If you must leave class early without prior notice to me, write your name, time of departure, and reason for leaving early on a sheet of paper and place it on the podium desktop at the front of the room as you leave. I understand that this is occasionally necessary but the result, when done in excess in a class this large, can be a big distraction to fellow students who are trying to concentrate on the material being presented. All that I ask is that you try to be considerate of your classmates.

Welcome to MATH 125-004 FALL 2016 CLASS SCHEDULE AND HOMEWORK DUE DATES The ‘Course Highlights’ handout (available online in Blackboard) gives you tentative dates for coverage of each section in class, tentative homework assignment due dates and tentative test dates. Although I don’t expect those dates to change, it is possible. If a change is made, I will announce it in class, send an email notice, and make the change within WebAssign. The most important thing to remember is that the OFFICIAL due dates will be maintained in WebAssign. If anything on paper disagrees with WebAssign, then you should assume that the WebAssign date is the correct one. (Of course, you can ask me to be sure if there is any doubt.)

Welcome to MATH 125-004 FALL 2016 HOMEWORK Go into your course in Blackboard. Go to your PowerPoint Lectures and go through the Sec. 1.3 “Class” lectures. (You can do the same for the text lectures if you like.) As you go through the lecture, AT LEAST make note of what you understand and what you don’t understand as well. (This will help you know when to pay especially close attention when the material is covered in class.) If you haven’t already done so, get into WebAssign, purchasing access if necessary. If you feel confident in your understanding of the material, you are welcome to go ahead and start the homework assignment…but that is completely up to you.
