Grading Scale A 90-100 B 80-89 C 70-79 D 60-69 F 59 and below I Incomplete

GPA & Quality Points Grade Standard Honors AP Courses A 4 4.5 5 B 3 3.5 C 2 2.5 D 1 1.5 F

Second Language A Second Language is generally not recommended for 9th graders unless taking Honors English: You can pick-up a second foreign language—one in 9th and 10th, second in 11th and 12th Spanish, French, and Latin are offered at PHS

Attendance Students must submit a note within 3 schoold days after returning to school. After 3 absences, a student must make up 30 minutes of time for each one

Driver Eligibility: Students must pass 70% of courses (5 out of 6 on a traditional schedule) to be able to obtain or maintain their permit/drivers license! Students can register for Driver’s Ed at 14 ½ by going to www.ncdrivingschool.com

Athletic Eligibility: All incoming freshmen are eligible for athletics fall semester of their freshman year, but must earn a 1.5 weighted GPA for the first semester in order to be eligible for the second semester. After first semester of their freshman year, students are eligible if they pass five out of their six classes during the semester previous to the sport they wish to play.

Thoughts to Ponder The honors level courses are very rigorous. They could have 2-3 hours of homework a night if they are taking more than one. Think carefully about high school activities and how much time they will take (band, athletics, drama, etc.) Ask yourself—would I have time to do all of this? We want the student to reach their highest potential and also be well rounded.

Sample Schedule Semester 1 Semester 2 English I Honors Civics Honors Visual Arts I Health/PE Common Math 1 Earth Science Semester 2 English I Honors Civics Honors Visual Arts I Microsoft Office Common Math 1 Earth Science We have 6 classes all year and our 4 period is block so it changes 2nd semester which allows student to have 7 classes at the end of the school year.

PCHS Schedule Change Policy: Schedules will only be changed for the following reasons: Student has already received credit for the course. Student has not met the prerequisite for the scheduled course. Student has an incomplete schedule. Student previously failed the course with the same teacher. Student needs specific course to meet graduation requirements (priority is given to seniors and students with non-elective graduation requirement issues). Student wants to increase rigor. Student’s schedule must be changed for administrative reasons (class size, etc).

Your student will most likely have homework most nights… Be sure to check your child’s Powerschool account regularly. All teachers at PHS are required to maintain update Powerschool regularly. This is where they will post the grades for (tests, projects, assignments, homework, etc).

College Planning? In 9th Grade? College Admission Offices pay careful attention to the following: Grade Point Average (GPA) Difficulty of course load SAT/ACT scores Class rank High school and community activities Recommendations IT’S VERY IMPORTANT TO START PLANNING IN 9TH GRADE IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY!!! Please visit cfnc.org or collegeboard.org for high school planning timelines.

Registering on Powerschool Powerschool is designed to give GCS high school students and parents access to their records, including schedules, attendance, and grades. Students will select 7 primary (1st choice) credit courses AND 3 alternate elective (2nd choice) credit courses. Choose CAREFULLY because many 9th graders will have alternates in their final schedule.
