Video Discussion Talk with partner and discuss the following: What does this have to do with English? How does this apply to writing? Does this apply to me at all?

Objectives Review concepts of Ethos, Pathos, and Logos Discuss the importance of each and when it is applicable to your writing How persuasion can be utilized in writing

Ethos, Pathos, & Logos Bonus: who can tell me what these are? Who is the Greek philosopher who coined these persuasion techniques?

Ethos: Ethical or Moral English Words: Ethical, Ethics The author or creator’s credibility, believable, and/or likeability Can come from inside the text (intrinsic) or outside the text (extrinsic) The speaker of writer must demonstrate credibility to audience to be persuasive

 For example… She has Ethos!! You are sick and you go to the doctor, she gives you a prescription for a pill that would make you feel better, would you take the pill?  She has Ethos!!

 Continued… Terrible idea! NO ETHOS! How would the situation change if you were at the mall, felt sick, and your friend offered you a pill? 

Pathos: Feeling English Words: Empathy, Sympathy, Pathetic, Antipathy Stories, scenarios, or statements designed to create an emotional response. When you are persuaded by pathos, you accept a claim based on how it makes you feel, without fully analyzing how valid he claim is You may be persuaded by fear, love, patriotism, hatred, joy, humor, guilt The use of pathos can be extremely effective– and also manipulative.

Pathos Example:

Logos: Logic & Reason English Words: Logic, Logical Logos refers to any attempt to appeal to the intellect Appeals to the left side of our brain. We find certain patterns, conventions, and methods of reasoning to be convincing and persuasive Numbers, polls, facts, and statistics are also examples of the persuasive use of logic
