(verb) to convince by appealing to reason or understanding Ethos: THINK OF THE WORD ETHICS Refers to the trustworthiness of the speaker/writer If you trust the speaker/author, you are more likely to listen to what he or she has to say Based on a writer’s tone What it is: Personal Appeal How it Works: Based on the persona of the writer

Why? Can also be the facts and statistics used to help support the argument. Whenever you accept any claim based on how it makes you feel without fully analyzing the rationale behind the claim, you are acting on pathos. Often includes vivid and emotional language, and sensory details What it is: Emotional Appeal How it Works: Tugs at the feelings of the audience
