What did it tell us about our perceptions of culture What is culture? How is culture formed? Ask pupils what they thought of the Nacirema culture- does it appear to be better or worse than theirs? Is it strange? After feedback-reveal ethnocentrism. Pupils must write definition in book Ethnocentrism: This is when people view their own culture as ‘normal’ and believe other cultures to be strange and inferior.

All members of society are given a social position/ status by their culture. A status can be ASCRIBED- fixed at birth, it is inherited or biological- e.g. race and gender Or it can be ACHIEVED- individuals have control over these attained status’ through education (this is especially true in Western culture), jobs or marriage. Why?

In pairs, look at the pictures and write down 2-3 behaviours you associate or expect from the people in the pictures. WHY do you expect them to behave in this way?

LO: Can I explain the impact culture has on forming our identity? ROLES- Society expects those of a certain status to behave in a particular way. A set of norms is imposed on an individuals’ status. Different Types of Culture- what do these mean?? Mainly subscribed to by the powerful and wealthy (upper class). Often seen as superior to other cultures because its percieved that only people with a certain education can appreciate it. HIGH CULTURE POPULAR CULTURE CONSUMER CULTURE GLOBAL CULTURE Also known as mass culture is mainly associated with entertainment culture. E.g. cinema, newspapers, music. it is enjoyed by most people and forms a part of their leisurely activities. This is due to the increasing consumption (buying) of goods and services. Shopping is a popular past time for many people in Britain. Ask pupils what they think these mean? Feedback as class. Then give pupils definition to see whether initial ideas link up to any of the definitions. Feedback as a class. Globalization is a massive influence on how we live our lives. Indiviudals travel more, listen to music from other countries, watch Hollywood films. Our lives are made up with lots of other cultures.
