4. Important Vocabulary
ASSUMPTION – assuming something is true or probably true without knowing that it is true
CULTURAL AWARENESS– an awareness of one’s culture as well as other cultures, including similarities and differences
STEREOTYPE– to believe unfairly that all people or things with a particular characteristic are the same
Prejudice– : an unfair feeling of dislike for a person or group because of race, sex, religion, etc.
: a feeling of like or dislike for someone or something especially when it is not reasonable or logical

How does Body Ritual Among the Nacirema help us understand our own view of other cultures and how we are viewed by other cultures?

15. Assignment
Brainstorm a list of other rituals that the Nacirema do that may seem strange to someone from another culture (i.e. watching tv, playing a certain sport, etc.)
Write a paragraph to describe your ritual with the same technique used by the author (make it seem as strange as possible to an outsider).
When prompted, read your paragraph to your partner and they will guess what the ritual is.
