A few words from High School… What do they mean? Required Courses Elective Courses Pre-requisite Courses Freshman Junior Senior Sophomore Have students have a quick aisle partner discussion of the above terms then explain them what each means. Also explain that they will graduate from Shelton High School BUT…NEXT YEAR is their FRESHMAN YEAR.

A look at next years 9th grade course offerings at Oakland Bay Junior High Required Courses (Plugged in Automatically) Math (All Year) Science (All Year) English (All Year) Elective Courses (Your Choice) Hand out the “Oakland Bay Junior High 9th grade SAMPLE Course Request Form”. Take some time to explain how students will be automatically scheduled into their required courses based on their ability/assessment results. Then take some time to look over the list of elective choices. Explain any courses that might be confusing. Example: Marketing and/or Pre-AP World History

Let’s be a School Counselor for a moment… Tim is a clever student. Often in science class he can think of solutions to practical problems. Once he helped the teacher get a series of hoses connected from the sink to another part of the classroom by creating adapters from parts of his binder. He doesn’t really want to do more school after he graduates but has a plumbing apprenticeship in mind. What are FIVE courses Tim should take? Read the above student description and have students offer suggested courses.

What are FIVE courses Cynthia should take? Cynthia is really outspoken in class especially when she gets a chance to argue. She loves arguing with her friends too. At cheerleader practice she even debates with friends about the best order of the dances. Cynthia hasn’t thought much about what she wants to be but her parents think she would be a great lawyer because she likes to argue so much. What are FIVE courses Cynthia should take? Read the above student description and have students offer suggested courses.

Now it’s time to Advise Yourself Write in your TOP “career” interest in the space provided. Choose five (5) related high school courses Write in your TOP interest/activity in the space provided Under “My 9th Grade Courses”, fill in your REQUIRED courses and your three (3) “must take” courses for next school year in order to pursue your top interests Pass out the 8-3 “Interesting High School Courses” worksheet and have the students follow the prompts and fill it in.

Conclusion My High School Plan You are NOT locked in to these choices Your activity and career interests will most likely change over the next few months or years Goal: To be Career and College Ready! Explain that they are NOT registering for classes now. This is just to get them thinking about what courses are offered and what they should register for in the Spring. This is the first step to developing a “personal pathway” toward a Career and College Ready Diploma.
