How to Write a Cover Letter

What is a Cover Letter? A letter sent alongside your resume to introduce yourself Explanation of why you are sending in your resume Provide detailed information about you

What’s the Point of a Cover Letter? Introduce yourself Cover letters should carry a message about you Get you noticed Project the desired image of you or your business Convey special information – interests, skills Highlight accomplishments – awards, results Get employers to read your resume

You Should Include… Your address and the date the letter was written The name and address of the person to whom the letter is being sent A salutation (Dear ____:) A title of respect, such as Dr., Mr., or Ms. The body of the letter A complimentary close and signature Can also include enclosure notifications (such as your resume)

Helpful Hints: Be assertive – the first 20 words are the most important Value to employer – What makes you valuable to your future employer? What can you bring to the company? Use simple and direct language and grammar Let your letter reflect your individuality… be you! Send it to someone by name… “To whom it may concern” is the LAST option Be friendly, not pushy Tell your reasons for sending the letter

Helpful Hints: Keep your letter to ONE PAGE Type on good quality Letter Size paper PROOFREAD… ask a friend or family member to check the cover letter for errors Email, mail, or hand-deliver your cover letter Make it look consistent to your resume… Don’t mix fonts!!!

Relate your skills, experiences, and qualities that would benefit you in this position Paragraph 3: Answers “What is my next step?” Refer the reader to your enclosed resume Reiterate your interest in the position Specify how you will follow up Sincerely, Your signature Your name Telephone number Email address First Paragraph – Reason for writing Second Paragraph – Point out Qualifications Third Paragraph – Call attention to resume, reiterate interest

Remember your ACTION WORDS! Use these words to effectively demonstrate how you made an impact in your previous jobs, school, volunteering, etc. Accomplished Achieved Doubled Enhanced Exceeded Initiated Introduced Proved Excelled Impressed Improved Motivated Produced Refined Resolved Succeeded Transformed Valued

POINTS TO INCLUDE… Show that you have done your research and understand what the company does Emphasize your skills that relate to the employer’s needs Explain how your education and knowledge will relate to the requirements of the job End your letter by thanking the employer for reading it Tell them that you are interested in meeting them for an interview at a future date

Don’t Forget to… Use proper grammar and correct spelling Do not use slang words/ phrases Be brief, but cover the subject Stick to the point of the letter Proofread, proofread, proofread! Ask for help if you need it Strive for neatness and personality
