2 What the heck is a Cover Letter?
A covering letter goes with, and covers, a resume sent in response to a specific job advertisement. Cover letters are concise, to the point, and focused.

3 Purpose of the Covering Letter
The cover letter introduces you!, points to your resume and, ultimately, gets you the interview you need!

4 Cover Letter Like your resume, your cover letter should only be a single page. Show a keen interest in the company, letting the employer/reader know you researched their organization or company. Use business/formal language.

Personal Letterhead The date Inside Address Salutation Body (3 paragraphs) Closing Signature

6 Personal Letterhead The Date
Word processed, centered, begin typing on first line. Put your full name and contact information. The Date Acceptable styles of dating your letter are as follows: December 1st, 2012

7 Inside Address Salutation
Write the name and title of the contact person. Include the company name and full address of the business. Salutation Address specifically to the contact person. Avoid using “To Whom It May Concern.” Addressing the person adds a personal element to the cover letter.

8 Body First Paragraph -Clearly state the job for which you are applying
-State how you learned of the position -Demonstrate what you know about the company.

9 Body Second Paragraph -Tell how and why you are best suited for the position. -Highlight your major skills that relate to the position. -Highlight how these will benefit the employer.

10 Body Third Paragraph -Express your enthusiasm to work in the company.
-Express your appreciation for the person’s attention. -Request a personal interview. -Include the hours to contact you, along with your phone number and . -Indicate you will be following up through a phone call.

11 Closing Signature -Close your cover letter with “Sincerely.”
-Note that closing a letter often changes, so do your research in what is appropriate for the current time. Signature -Sign your legal signature in ink. -Type your full name after you have signed the cover letter. -Leave enough room to fit your signature in appropriately.
