2 What is it? A summary of your qualifications Provides the employer with information about: Your education Your work experience Your activities and interests The kind of person you are (awards, skills, strengths, etc.

3 Do Research Find out: General information about the job you are applying for The desired qualifications and skills Talk to current employees (if you know any) to find out what the position is all about.

4 Writing Your Resume Include your name, address, phone number and email (student email, or gmail is best) Use headings (ex. “Education” “Employment History” “Computer Skills”) Use point form (regular bullets) Begin with action words to describe experience

5 Include: Work Experience Education Relevant Courses Activities (sports, groups, etc.) Awards Specialized Skills (another language, computers, etc.) Volunteer work References

6 Should NOT be a family member (some exceptions) ALWAYS ask permission Let the references know when you have applied for a job so they can anticipate a phone call. Include: Name, relationship, phone, and email

7 Writing Your Resume You can also include a(n): “Objective Statement” (a short statement describing the kind of job you are hoping to find) “Summary of Qualifications” (a short bulleted list outlining the skills that you have relevant to the position)

8 Winning Resumes Are… As concise as possible 2 page limit, 30 second scan Error free Perfect spelling and grammar Dates are accurate Nicely Formatted 12 point font, 8 ½ x 11 paper, consistent, effective use of bold type and underlining.

9 Cover Letters Expresses your interest in the job Outlines your qualifications Ultimately introduces you to the potential employer

10 Cover Letters Should: Be written in business letter format Use confident language (“I am”) Never say “To Whom It May Concern” Find out who to address it to! Be error free Spelling, grammar, no typos Include 3 paragraphs

11 First Paragraph INTRODUCTION: Express interest in the position, explain how you heard about the job opening EX. “I would like to express my interest in the position of _______ with your company. I learn of the position…”

12 Second Paragraph BODY: Match your skills and experience with the position. Explain why you are right for the job. EX. “My skills/experience compliment this position as I have…”

13 Third Paragraph CLOSING: Thank them for considering you for the position. State your interest in obtaining an interview. EX. “I would like to thank you for your consideration and I look forward to discussing this opportunity with you in further detail.”
