Frida Kahlo Way

Take Frida Kahlo Way to the Diego Rivera mural How would you like to be able to say “Take Frida Kahlo Way to the Diego Rivera mural”?

Rename Phelan from Ocean to Judson You can do this if we rename Phelan Avenue from Ocean to Judson “Frida Kahlo Way.” Sadly the son of the street’s namesake, James Duval Phelan, former SF mayor and California senator besmirched the family name with racist and xenophobic campaigns.

Galería de la Raza Day of the Dead 1978 The City of San Francisco has embraced Frida Kahlo over the years. In 1978, local Latino/Latina artists installed a group exhibition at the Galería de la Raza as an homage to Frida Kahlo.

Intergenerational Inspirations: Rio Yañez, CCSF alum, installs “Ghetto Kahlo” at the Galería de la Raza in 2009. Kahlo has remained in the heart of San Franciscans. In 2009, Rio Yañez, installed “Ghetto Frida” at the Galería de la Raza. Yanez saw her as a tough lady. She lived with disabilities, endured heart ache, spoke out against social injustice, and insisted on her own sexual agency.

Frida and Diego in San Francisco 1930 Diego receives commission to paint murals in the Luncheon Club of the San Francisco Stock Exchange and the California School of Fine Arts [now the San Francisco Art Institute]. Frida meets photographers Imogen Cunningham, Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. While Diego paints his murals, Frieda paints “Frieda and Diego Rivera,” a double portrait based on a wedding photograph. In truth Kahlo and Rivera had a long and affectionate history with the City of San Francisco. In 1930, Rivera was commissioned to paint two murals at the old San Francisco Stock Exchange and the San Francisco Art Institute. Kahlo befriends photographers Imogen Cunningham, Ansel Adams, and Edward Weston. While Diego paints his murals, Frida paints “Frieda and Diego Rivera,”

San Francisco MOMA now in the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

1940: City College of San Francisco architect Timothy Pflueger invites Diego Rivera to the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island to paint a fresco, later known as the Pan American Unity Mural. Nearly 30,000 people view it. Kahlo calls it his best work. They remarry at City Hall in San Francisco. .
