HE520-2: Analyze current legal issues that affect the administration of higher education. HE520-3: Apply legal principles to practices of institutional operation, specific institutional problems, and challenges that arise in higher education settings. 8

Kaplan University Attendance Policy On a weekly basis (Wed.-Tues.), one of the following must be completed: • Attending a seminar • Posting to any classroom discussion thread • Posting to the Professor’s virtual office • Submitting an assignment via the drop box Note: You must never exceed 7 days without meeting the weekly attendance requirements. If you do not record attendance in any of the ways defined above for more than 7 days, you can expect an outreach phone call or email from the University. If you do not record attendance for more than 21 days, you will be dropped from the program. 13

Syllabus Overview: Late Assignments Participation and timeliness are extremely important to your success. Assignments that are submitted past due date will be subject to the 10% penalties in accordance with the grading rubric Work that is submitted two days after the due date will not be accepted. E-mail me if you have an emergency situation occur that interferes with an assignment being completed on-time. 15

Assignment: Unit 3 Assignment Scenario Analysis Paper Course Outcome HE520-3: Apply legal principles to practices of institutional operation, and to specific institutional problems and challenges that arise in higher education settings. Due Date Tuesday, April 10 Point Value 100 Assignment Type Paper Minimum Assignment Length At least two to three pages (double-spaced) plus cover and reference pages Description You will examine various employment and constitutional issues that apply to the faculty scenario at Mountainside State University, then write a short paper to demonstrate how constitutional issues affect faculty employment. 21

Assignment: Unit 6 Assignment Otherwise Qualified Paper Course Outcome HE520-2: Analyze current legal issues that affect the administration of higher education. Due Date Tuesday, May 1 Point Value 100 Assignment Type Paper Minimum Assignment Length At least three to four pages (double-spaced) Description Based on the information in Chapter 8 of the Kaplin and Lee (2007) text, write a short paper evaluating the students’ claim based on the “otherwise qualified” standard. 23

Assignment: Unit 9 (Course Project) Contractual Relationships Course Outcome HE 520-3: Apply legal principles to practices of institutional operation, specific institutional problems, and challenges that arise in higher education settings. Due Date Tuesday, May 22 Point Value 220 Assignment Type Paper Minimum Assignment Length At least four to five pages (double-spaced) Description You will provide a four to five page written analysis of whether the parties in both scenarios created a contractual relationship. 25

Assignment: Unit 9 (continued) Introduction The introduction provides the context of the topic of the paper and relates the purpose of your paper. For example: “It is the purpose of this paper to analyze contractual relationships.” This section of the paper is one paragraph. Contractual Relationship Using the language from the Kaplin and Lee (2007) text provide a brief background of the required elements of a contract. Admissions Did the Dean of Admission at each institution have the authority to contract? If so, under what type of authority? If not, what precluded them from having authority? This section is one to two pages long. Student Activities Did the Director of Student Activities at each institution have the authority to contract? If so, under what type of authority? If not, what precluded them from having authority? This section is one to two pages. Conclusion The conclusion summarizes the major points of the paper and reiterates its purpose. It ties everything together in a concise manner. The conclusion is one paragraph long. 26
