5 REC - Regular & Effective Contact
Traditional classes & Web Enhanced - instructor & students meet on campus on a regular basis Hybrid & online classes Some portion of face-2- face (F2F) instruction is replaced Proactive instructor contact must be made at the same frequency of F2F equivalent

6 REC vs RSI There is an ongoing conversation regarding Regular Effective Contact (REC) and Regular Substantial Interaction (RSI) State’s education code uses the phrase “regular effective contact.”  Federal Department of Education (DoE) and our accreditation agency uses the phrase “regular and substantive interaction” “Regular” means at frequent points throughout the course.  They were looking for weekly exchanges between faculty and students. “Substantive” means academic in nature, something that helps the student learn.  Instructor feedback on student performance is substantive.  “Interaction” means two-way communication.  interaction that is initiated by the instructor.  Not just responses to student inquiries.

7 RSI – Regular & Substantive Interaction
Department of Education (DoE) review criteria: Does the syllabus establish expectations for RSI (for both students and instructors) Does the instructor provide adequate RSI in the discussion forums. Does the instructor provide adequate substantive feedback on assignments and tests. DoE auditors feedback: Instructor feedback like "Good Job" or "Remember the essay is due this Friday" do not count as RSI. To be substantive, instructor comments must be academic in nature and lead to student learning...not just offer congratulations or be about class maintenance. * provided by Coastline's Department of Education (DoE) review team & Bob Nash to assess the "regular and substantive interaction" (RSI) in their online courses

19 Using Canvas to manage LDA
Blackboard Gradebook feature Student drops, the student completely disappears from the Gradebook.  lost all the information regarding the completed meaningful work   request the information from LMS tech support to submit grades Canvas  Student does not "disappear" when they drop grayed out or become "Inactive"  Ability to separate out your inactive students reference all data relating to inactive student at end of semester

20 Deactivating Students
An inactive enrollment retains prior activity in a course but does not allow the student to access course content. Inactive students do not appear in any messaging lists within the course and cannot be added to a group. Grades for inactive students still display in the Gradebook and can be edited like other students. Data available for last day of attendance
