Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind 02.01

Quick Thought(s) What’s a choice you’ve made today that is a “no brainer?” It just kinda happened What’s a choice that you made today that you did without thinking about it too much? What’s a choice right now that you’re currently agonizing over?

Learning Target I can identify and define what beginning with the end in mind means as well as analyze how three types of decisions are used in my life. Success Criteria: I can sort decisions into three categories and hypothesize the advantages and disadvantages of one of these categories. I can identify a complicated decision and come to a thought out conclusion about it.

Put First Things First Students make informed and thoughtful decisions. Students analyze how their decisions affect themselves and others. Use pages 73-76 in 7 Habits to complete your vocab square What does this mean to you? What are some examples? What does someone who is a responsible decision-maker look like? Use the Vocab Square to complete this, make sure you remind students to fill it out complete and check with them that it is accurate. It’ll be important to know how they perceive the skill.

The 3-types of decisions There are 3 types of decisions: The “No Decision”- This is the one where you don’t have much of a choice, someone else has made the choice for you. The “Snap Decision”- a quick choice that you have made with no consideration of the result. The “Considered Decision”- a choice that has evaluated other options, is the best for you and others, and will produce positive outcomes immediately and in the future. 3 types of decisions- The no decision is just that, there is no real choice- or if there is one, not making that choice has incredibly bad repercussions or you aren’t involved in the decision making process The snap decision- A quick “gut” reaction that doesn’t consider or weigh the outcomes of an event What are two advantages and disadvantages of each type of decision?

The “No Decision” Decision Let’s get hypothetical here. Your life after this point has been decided for you. Your job and your hobby have already been chosen by fate. Enter your results on your worksheet Wheel of Jobs! Wheel of Hobbies!

Letting Fate Decide Now that fate has decided how your life will look, let’s take a few minutes to reflect on your new life. What are some upsides of not having to make these choices? What are the drawbacks? Use the hand out to answer the above questions

Closure On your decision worksheet, answer the reflection question: This thought experiment didn’t consider your choices, interests or wants at all. Which would you rather have, control over your decisions or to have them made for you? Please explain in a brief (3-5 sentence) paragraph what your choice is regarding having choice in the decisions that shape your life. Post this as a question on google classroom so students can “vote” on them as a multiple choice option OR use this as a discussion for students in small groups

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind Snap Decisions

Imagine a world where you had no ability to think of the future Imagine a world where you had no ability to think of the future. Your decisions are made only on information you have about the present. In a lot of ways, life would be a choose your own adventure novel. You can’t see what’s ahead until it’s happening. Mention how difficult and scary it could be to treat your decision as if they’re occurring in a vaccuum.

Snap Decisions Snap decisions are ones that require little time to make. They require little to no consideration of the future. Here we can see some young people that are making serious snap decisions with no consideration of the outcome. Others are starting to making considered decisions, but since they aren’t fully considering the outcomes and risks and rewards, the decision seems to be incredibly torturous and painful.

Begin With THe End in Mind Part 3: Considered Decisions

When’s a time? When’s a time you agonized over a decision? Were you happy with your final choice or or did you have any regrets?

Major Life Decisions What to do with your life (career) What to do with your life (family and friends) Where to live (Location, rent or buy?) Who to hang out with? What to buy? When to keep going and when to quit?

Looking ahead Choose a major life decision that is facing you right now. We’re going to work through how to make a decision about this problem. Mr. Todd Problem: Should I go on vacation to Palm Springs with a group of guys and not my family?

Choices What are the possible choices you can make regarding the problem? Mr. Todd problem: Go on vacation or stay home Fill these in with your own current major life choice!

Consequences What are the consequences of this decision Mr. Todd issue: Flights and rounds of golf are very expensive. My family would miss me. We do not get a chance to go on vacation as a family very often.

Values What are the things that you value that might impact your choice? Mr. Todd Problem: My time with my family. My opportunities to have enjoyable expiriences in my life. Money.

Feelings What are your gut feelings about the issue?: Mr. Todd Problem: I can make this happen, I do not go on vacation with my friends very often

More info What information adds context to your decision or may influence you. Mr. Todd problem: We do a nice job as a family saving $, I have a free place to stay and golf in Palm Springs, and we are going on vacation as a family in February.

Who can Help Who are people that can help you either solve this problem or offer reasonable advice? Mr. Todd Problem: My wife, my kids, and the friends I might go on vacation with.
