You have started to write a conclusion. You have a reason to support your final conclusion. You have written a reasoned conclusion.

What do we aim to achieve in this piece of writing?

Peer assessing using model answers

Person A Rites of passage are important key stages in a person’s life, like marriages, funerals and so on. On the one hand I agree, rites of passage are a waste of time because as with birth ceremonies you wont remember them, marriages have a lot of people divorcing and funerals because you’re dead your not around to enjoy them. On the other hand I disagree, rites of passage are valuable experiences as they show that people care for them. Overall I think rites of passage are good as they are very important and very special to everybody. Person B Rites of passage are important, key stages in life. For example, funerals marriages and birth ceremonies. On the one hand I agree, rites of passage are a waste of time, this is because at funerals you are dead already, so you don’t know what is going on. Rites of passage are also way too expensive, for example you might spend a fortune on a party for a marriage or funeral and you are more worried about what people think of the party than the religious meaning of the event. On the other hand I disagree, rites of passage are good, as they are experiences that help people to remember life achievements and they can bring families together, who may not see each other very frequently. They are opportunities to highlight aspects of a good life and as such are important to us humans. Overall I think rites of passage are valuable, especially to religious people. I’m not religious but I do think I would like to celebrate with my family when I get married and be remembered properly when I die with a funeral, rather than just have my body dumped at the tip!

Person C A rite of passage is different stages in life that people go through. They are very important to some people and can be celebrated. On the one hand I agree, rites of passage are a waste of time, this is because all these things cost money. An average wedding costs £23,000 and average funeral costs £7000 – imagine that, just to put someone in the ground! Plus if you are dead you obviously won’t remember your funeral and you won’t remember your Christening because you were too young. It also seems hypocritical to have a Christening to welcome a baby if you’re not religious. Getting married also can mean that some people will get divorced, in fact 1:3, with that high rate it might be said to be a bit pointless getting married in the first place. On the other hand I disagree, rites of passage are valuable experiences, this is because they are all about making memories, they are special. I’m sure people even if they can’t remember themselves would want a funeral to be remembered rather than be forgotten. Different rites of passage are a once in a lifetime opportunity, except marriage – you can sometimes go through it again. They are about caring, loving and respecting others, plus everyone loves a party! Overall I think that on balance, rights of passage are important and you should include them in your life. Rites of passage can be true celebrations of life and usually are full of symbolism which make them meaningful and special to those involved or witnessing them. I also think that it should be okay to spend as little or as much as you want on them and not be judged about how much you spend. I think marriage would definitely be part of my life, especially since marriage is really the only one you remember.

Person D Rights of passage are special times in a persons life, like when you are born, get married, get divorced, have children, and die. On the one hand rites of passage are a total waste of time as they are really just excuses for a big party. I really like parties and will always have presents, cards, gifts, cake, food and my friends round for parties, because my mum lets me. My favourite party was for my 10 th birthday when we went go-karting. Anyway, when you have a rite of passage you have parties. They also are a bit pointless if you are not religious. But you don’t have to be religious to have a rite of passage. My nan wasn’t religious and when she died she had a woodland funeral with no vicar, we just read out poems about life’s journey. Marriages often end in divorce so they are pointless too. My mum divorced my dad and said is was just a bit of paper in the end. On the other hand rites of passage are not a waste of time, as they do mark important points in a persons life and usually are really good reasons to celebrate key points in life. Life would be pretty boring if we didn’t have any key points to look forward to. Rites of passage like funerals are key times we remember all of the good things that a person has done in life, like my gran, when we had her funeral we all remembered a funny moment in her life and a good memory we had of her. Overall I think that rites of passage are a great idea, we should have more of them.
