What do you think?? What do you think makes someone a “leader?” Is there such a thing as a natural born leader? Or can leadership qualities be developed? Are you considered a leader within any group that you associate with (school, home, church, etc)? Why or why not?

LEADERS As a leader, health care workers are called upon to influence the well being or safety of others. Since original perceptions can change through the course of time, selecting a leader is an important responsibility. Name some people you think of as leaders.

LEADERS A leader is a person who directs with authority and influence. A leader is one who guides directs facilitates process empowers influences others to follow. People often have higher expectations for a leader .

DESIRABLE QUALITIES OF LEADERS A willingness to lead Acceptance by those to be led The ability to identify and organize goals Good work ethics Dependability Self-confidence Communicates effectively

? What Are The 3 Main Types Of Leader?

Democratic Leader Encourages participation of all individuals in decisions Listens to others opinions Bases the decisions on what is best for the group as a whole Allows the group to take responsibility for the decisions

Laissez-Faire Leader More of an informal type of leader Believes in the noninterference in the affairs of others Strives for only minimal rules or regulations Usually avoids making decisions until forced by circumstances to do so Term comes from a French idiom meaning “to let alone” translated to mean “allow to act”

Autocratic Often called a “dictator” Maintains total rule, makes all decisions, and has difficulty delegating duties Seldom asks for opinions of others Emphasizes discipline Expects others to follow directions at all times Followers usually follow for fear of punishment or because of extreme loyalty

Leadership Quiz What kind of leader are you??

LEADERSHIP & TEAMWORK Leadership can be defined as deliberately causing people-driven actions in a planned fashion for the purpose of accomplishing the leader’s agenda. Quality healthcare is dependent on teamwork and leadership

TEAM MEETINGS As a healthcare worker, you are part of a team. You may be on some teams at school. What are they??? Set the agenda by defining goals and desired outcomes Keep the meeting on task Brainstorm ideas Resolve differences by consensus Assign follow-up tasks and items Evaluate the session and end on time

GROUPS BRAINSTORM TO GENERATE IDEAS Define the problem Set the ground rules Treat participants with respect All ideas have value Document ideas

GROUPS REACH CONSENSUS Consensus is a decision in which everyone participates in creating and everyone can live with and support. Develop criteria for the decision Find areas of common agreement (what do we all agree on) Develop a consensus decision Ask for a show of consensus (a vote)

CONFLICT IS “OK” IF MANAGED Conflict is essential to critical thinking because members must feel the freedom to differ Manage constructively Use ground rules (ex. – no interruptions while talking) Acknowledge differences as they occur Look for common ground and identify alternatives Resolve quickly by consensus

ROLES OF TEAM MEMBERS Determined by personalities, qualities, & values Some of the qualities of team members include: Trust Sensitivity Belief in consensus Pride in the organization Value of individual differences Appreciation of diversity Promptness Organization Enthusiasm Critical Thinking
