2nd Grade News October 2016 We are off to a great start in 2nd Grade! Inside the Classroom Social Studies: SOL 2.12. Students will identify George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Susan B. Anthony, Helen Keller, Jackie Robinson, and Martin Luther King, Jr. as Americans whose contributions improved the lives of other Americans Science: SOL 2.1 Students will plan and conduct scientific investigations 2.2 Students will investigate natural and artificial magnets Math: SOL 2.20 Students will identify and recognize patterns. SOL 2.1 Students will read, write, and identify place value in 3-digit numbers. SOL 2.1 Students will round numbers to the nearest ten. 2.5 Students will recall addition and subtraction facts and (2.9) recognize and describe related facts. Health SOL 2.2: student will identify that personal health decisions and health habits influence health and wellness. Language Arts: Students work daily on reading fluency skills and comprehension. We are working on expanding our vocabulary, phonetic strategies, making predictions and connections. SOL 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, 2.8, 2.9, 2.10. In Writers Workshop students are working on non-fiction writing and will explore authors as mentors, SOL 2.11, 2.12, 2.14. PBIS As a class we are contributing to our community through positive SHARK behavior: Smart Choices, Helpful, Achieve, Responsible, Kind Upcoming Dates Oct. 7-Fun Run Oct. 10-Columbus Day – No school Oct. 11-moveable Monday Oct. 13–Orange out day-wear orange. Oct. 17 -Scholastic book orders due online: https://clubs.scholastic.com/home Class code is Q8478 Oct. 19- Fall picture make-up day November 4th End of 1st Quarter November 7th & 8th No School Teacher Work Days

Snack Please send in a healthy, non-messy snack for your child to eat each day. Teacher’s Corner Thank you for your support at home! Reminders: Please leave personal items and toys at home. This ensures that these items will not get lost, damaged or stolen. Please remember to send a jacket or sweater to school with your child if the weather is chilly. We will go outside for recess, unless it rains. Spirit Day: Don’t forget that every Friday is SPIRIT DAY! Wear your Moorefield Spirit shirt, or sweatshirt.
