Joints Chapter 8. What is a joint? Defined as the site where two or more bones meet. Also called an “articulation” Joints allow our skeleton mobility.
Joints Joints (articulations) - the sites where two or more bones meet; weakest parts of skeleton. Two fundamental functions: – Give skeleton mobility.
Joints. Joint (AKA Articulation) A point of contact between bones, between cartilage and bone or between teeth and bone.

Skeletal System Articulations. Articulation (joint): a point of contact between bones. Some allow movement, others are immovable (sutures). Most joints.

Chapter 9 Joints

Joint Classification Functional Classification Synarthrosis – immovable Amphiarthrosis – slightly movable Diarthrosis – freely movable

Structural Classification: Fibrous joints (synarthroses) Cartilaginous joints Synovial joints

Types of Fibrous Joints Synarthroses Sutures – dense fibrous connective tissues in the skull. Syndesmoses – ligaments or membranes holding bones together. Example: tibia and fibula. Gomphoses – where the roots of the teeth attach to bone.

Types of Cartilaginous Joints Synchondroses – hyaline connection as in epiphyseal plates; ribs to manubrium. Symphyses – hyaline and fibrocartilage join the pubic bones.

Synovial Joints Have the following as part of the joint: Articular capsule Synovial fluid Accessory ligaments Articular discs / menisci Bursa

Words to Learn Sprain Rheumatoid arthritis Strain Osteoarthritis Bursitis Gouty arthritis Luxation Lyme disease Subluxation Synovitis Rotator cuff injury Arthritis
