2 Joints (articulations) = where bone meets bone Classification: Non-movable (synarthrosis) Slightly movable (amphiarthrosis) Freely movable (diarthrosis)

3 Synarthrosis may be connected by bone fusion, cartilage, or fibrous connections e.g. between the bones of the skull, between the teeth & jaws

4 Amphiarthrosis may be connected by collagen fibers or cartilage e.g. between tibia & fibula, between vertebrae

5 Diarthrosis surrounded by synovial fluid e.g. elbow, ankle, shoulder, hip

6 Accessory Structures of Synovial Joints Meniscus – fibrocartilage pad Fat pad – packing material for the joint Ligament –attaches bone to bone Tendon – connects skeletal muscle to bone Bursa – sac filled with synovial fluid that cushions adjacent structures & reduces friction Fig. 9.1
