How did we get here? Students spend 30 seconds in silence pondering this question – how did the world get here? How did humans get here? Then Think, pair, share

Science (chance) God (design) How did we get here? Vote with your feet – are we here by Science/chance or God/design? Now students have thought the question they need to stand up and vote with their feet. God (design)

How did we get here? Learning Objective: To explore our key question – How did we get here? To form my own opinion on how the universe came into existence To explore religious and scientific ideas To evaluate whether religious and scientific beliefs can work together

Theories Each group is going to be responsible for finding out about one important theory on how the universe was created. You need to read the information together as a group - you might want to take it in turns if people are happy to read. You then need to summarise the theory in your own words and answer the question on your sheet.

Marketplace One person is going to remain behind in your group to teach other people about their theory. The rest of the group needs to move around the room and visit the other market stalls to find out about the other 3 theories. You need to take notes on your sheet. Finally, you need to return back to your original group to feedback what you have discovered.

True or False Muslims and Christians believe exactly the same things about the creation of the universe. A fundamentalist will look for the deeper meaning in a sacred texts. Evidence for the Big Bang is red shift. William Paley used a watch as an analogy to show the world is too complex to have happened by chance. God’s creation shows he is all-powerful and designed the world. Muslims believe the world was made in exactly 6 days (6 lots of 24 hours). Muslims believe they can explore scientific explanations for the universe to help them understand God. The Big Bang is believed to have happened approximately 14 billion years ago.

Can you be religious and a scientist?   Class Discussion following a voting style activity, e.g. vote with your feet, class count etc. Agree Disagree
