On one hand the percentage of Christians in the UK has decreased and the percentage of people with no religion has increased. Why is this? You are going to identify and explain 3 factors which may have led to the decline of religion. FactorWhat is the factor? Explain the factor. 1. 2. 3.

Science The increase in scientific theory has led many people to question the existence of God. In the past people didn’t understand why people got better from illness or how human beings came to exist. They said only God could be responsible. Today many people believe that science can explain events that in the past people believed were an act of God.

Changes in Society In the past people were expected to go to church every Sunday. In fact, it was an important place to meet up with friends and family. By not going to church you distanced yourself from society and some people would not talk to you because you were seen to have turned your back on God. Today, going to church is not an expected part of life. People meet with friends and family at different times and there is no social stigma (disapproval) shown to those who don’t attend church.

Time In the past Sunday was a day when people didn’t do anything apart from attending church and spending time with family. Therefore, people had time to go to church. Today, many more people work on a Sunday. Many shops are open and in many places Sunday seems no different to any other day. Other people use Sunday to relax after a busy week but don’t believe church is part of this relaxation.

However, on the other hand the number of different religions in the UK has increased and so too have the number of Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs and other minority religious groups. Discuss this with the person next to you and identify 3 reasons for this change. 1. 2. 3.

MIGRATION: The number of people moving to the UK from other countries has increased. This means more Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus now live in the UK. INTEREST IN NEW RELIGIONS: Many people take a particular interest in new religions that offer something different to Christianity. There are an increasing number of British converts to Islam. SPIRITUALITY: Many people now believe that developing inner peace and a relationship with God can be done without being a member of a formal religious group. These people may fit into the ‘other religion’ category. 3 possible reasons for the increase in members of certain religious groups.

PLENARY: Is Religion in the UK declining? On one hand religion in the UK is declining because… However, on the other hand religion is not declining because… KEY WORDS: Science Society Time Migration Interest in new religions Spirituality Christians Hindus Muslims Sikh’s Non – religious
