Revision Notes Courtesy of Mr Dixon

Instructions This PowerPoint has all the information you need to complete your Revision Booklets for the Science & Belief unit. You should ensure that each section of the booklet is complete. If you have complete a section and there is additional information in this PowerPoint then ADD IT TO YOUR NOTES (This will help you with the unit test!!!) N.B If you do not have a booklet you should ask your teacher for one right now!!!

1. What is meant by belief? Beliefs are the ways we try to make sense of things. They are based on feelings or opinions rather than facts. 2. What is an issue? An issue is something that causes debate or argument.

3. List as many reasons as you can why the topic of “science and belief” leads to debate. - People feel very strongly about both arguments. - Both give different answers to some of the questions that people ask. - People have different religious beliefs, some see science as a threat more than others. - There is no guarantee that either science or religion are right, both are types of belief. Plus any more you can think of.

4. Explain what's involved in the six steps of the scientific method. 1. Observation – What is that can be seen happening. 2. Hypothesis – Educated Guess/Saying what will happen. 3. Experiment – Controlled examination of the evidence, putting it to the test. 4. Verification – Your report is used by others to verify (or replicate) your findings. 5. Theory – What happened and why? 6. Independent Verification – Results confirmed with other peoples findings.

5. Explain four ways that a religious people believe they can find out what’s real and true. - Revelation: God reveal knowledge to religious people - Scripture : Holy books such as Torah, Bible, Bhagavad-Gita etc. - Historical Events: Evidence of Great Flood and other religious events. - Spiritual Figures: Pope, Dalai Lama etc. - Religious Experience: Epiphany, dreams, visions etc. - Nature: Evidence of God in nature, the design argument. Plus any others you may already have

6.Why do some people only trust science? - Science is objective. - Science can provide evidence for the answers it gives. - The evidence that science gives can be tested. - Religion is no different to fairy tales. - There are so many religions, with so many answers – you can only trust science. - You can only believe what you can see.

7. Why do some people say you can trust religion too? - Religion offers answers to the Big Questions that right now science is unable to. - Religion offers comfort and hope, science does not. - There are billions of people around the world who are religious – they cant all be wrong! - There is evidence for religion e.g. The Great Flood. - Science has been wrong before – it was them that claimed the world was flat!

8. All of the matter in the universe was contained in a tiny quantum particle called a singularity. The particle exploded with incredible force, blasting out energy and matter. This was the beginning of time and space. As the matter came together in hot clumps, stars and galaxies began to form. Inside the stars the different elements were formed. A star in our galaxy went supernova and planet earth was formed from the debris of the explosion.

9. Biologists believe that all life on Earth is descended from a single life form. Over millions of years different life forms have adapted to suit their environment. The best adapted have survived, and the less well adapted have died out. (This is survival of the fittest) This is possible because of the tiny changes caused by random mutations which happen during reproduction. Over time the small changes build up to give a noticeable effect. Charles Darwin called this theory Natural Selection because it is a process which doesn’t need a designer.

10. Give three pieces of evidence for evolution. - Developing embryos show common features across many species before developing into adulthood. - The fossil record seems to show that through time, organisms become more complex. - Life forms on earth seem to share common features. - Different species seems to have evolved in different locations.

11. Give three pieces of evidence for the Big Bang. - Matter in the universe is moving apart – showing that there was a massive explosion at some point. - The amount of elements in the universe is what we should expect if the Big Bang happened. - Background radiation present today is what you would expect if there was a Big Bang.

12. Give as many reasons as you can why some religious people find the Big Bang Theory and the theory of evolution threatening. - They show the universe just happened by chance – there was no god or great power that caused it. - If god has nothing to do with the universe, how do you explain our sense of right and wrong. - It challenges the idea of the Fall (Adam & Eve) - It means we are less special than we thought. - Survival of the fittest does not seem like the creation of a lovable creator.

13. Give four reasons why someone might be a creationist. - You cant just pick and choose which parts of the bible to believe, you should just believe all of it. - Christianity is a faith, you don’t need evidence to have a belief. - God can do anything. Of course he could create the world in six days. - Surely the Big Bang theory is no easier to believe than the creation story????

14. Give four reasons why some Christians say you can believe in both Science and the Scientific Theories. - The creation story in the bible follows the same pattern as the scientific explanation. - The bible isn't meant to explain the exact details of how the universe began, just give a rough outline of the general picture. - Something must have caused the Big Bang, this could have been god. - The view of science and religion are both correct – human beings just don’t know enough to put them both together yet. Plus anything else you can think of.

Next Week You will all be sitting your Intermediate 2 Unit Test next week. As long as you take your, now completed, revision booklets home with you today and look over them a couple of times before next week you will have no problems at all with the test ( I promise!). Also, as I have already said, if everyone passes the Intermediate 2 test then there will be no need to sit the Intermediate 1 test…… if that happens then I will be giving you a reward period!
