1st conjugation Present Tense Active Voice

ALL VERBS HAVE 5 ATTRIBUTES PERSON NUMBER TENSE VOICE MOOD

Latin uses personal endings to express the person of the verb. o- I s- you (singular) t- he, she, it (there) mus- we tis – you (plural) nt- they Latin uses personal endings to express the person of the verb.

These are referred to as: 1st person singular 2nd person singular 3rd person singular 1st person plural 2nd person plural 3rd person plural o- I s- you (singular) t- he she, it, (there) mus- we tis – you (plural) nt - they

NUMBER SINGULAR o- I s- you t- he, she, it (there) PLURAL mus- we tis – you (plural) nt- they Number simply means singular or plural. The endings that show the person also show the number of the verb

TENSE The tense expresses when the verb takes place. There are six tenses in Latin. You are learning the PRESENT TENSE.

VOICE The voice tells you if the subject is doing the action or is being acted upon. There are two voices ACTIVE – the subject does the action PASSIVE – the subject is being acted upon For now we will only work with the ACTIVE VOICE

MOOD There are three moods in Latin Indicative – states a fact, asks a question Imperative – expresses a command Subjunctive – the wishy washy mood

CONJUGATION All verbs are listed with 4 forms in the vocabulary list. These are called the principal parts. Any verb that has a 1st principal part ending in – o and a 2nd principal part ending in –are belongs to the 1st conjugation

1st conjugation verbs laudo, laudare, laudavi, laudatum ambulo, ambulare, ambulavi, ambulatum habito, habitare, habitavi, habitatum

PRESENT ACTIVE INDICATIVE of the 1st CONJUGTION Take the 2nd principal part (also called the present active infinitive) Drop off the letters “ –re” Add one of the personal endings NOTA BENE – when adding the personal ending –o to the stem of the verb the –a disappears laudo (not laudao) – I praise
